Yes agree he should have put it away given the situation and conditions but I suppose it reflects his confidence at the moment.Yeah, but today it just wasn't a percentage shot on the risk/reward front.
I was watching intermittently while at work, and saw him play and miss a few times to it, and cut one or so that was genuinely short. I'm talking about the back/late cut off a length, like the one he got out to and the one that flew over Dravid's head.He atleast connected with hit 4/5 times before and hit 2/3 boundaries with it before he got out,tbf
Dhoni had a deep point and was enticing Bell to play that shot. They basically gave him the single. It was a clear tactic and I noted it at the ground immediately. Either they get the new batsman (Prior or Bresnan) on strike if he connects or they get Bell edging it.Also, Bell had a number of goes at that late cut, which he played very well in Australia. However, he played it on harder wickets, and when he was well in and 40-60+. Couldn't believe he kept on going for it today, it's just a shot that's not in the circumstances.
I was in the William Clarke stand. Great view (even though it was side-on and I generally prefer behind the bowler's arm) but it was an alcohol free stand so there wasn't too much of an atmosphere. I'm pretty sure I know what stand you are referring to. Lots of singing occurred in the 3rd session.Where were you Jono? I was high at the top of that media stand behind the bowlers arm, think its called Radcliffe Road End. Great view, but the atmosphere in the stand down to my left, square of the wicket looked amazing.
haha boycs has just gone... old.One note on commentators- listened to TMS up until lunch, Boycott compared Sreesanth and Kumar to good club bowlers (he rated Sharma though clearly)...

most sensible article.
Sree for a bag today. Feel it in my bones.
Exactly, McGrath never troubled any of the top batsmen after allseam no where near as dangerous to top batsmen as swing
He also tried it to one that was way too close and edged it over first slip...I think the point is that if he was a bit smarter he would've put it away. At least until it presented less of a risk (maybe later on in the day if things settled down a bit)He atleast connected with hit 4/5 times before and hit 2/3 boundaries with it before he got out,tbf
that's a very astute observation. I wish those jokers in the studio/production would show us a full field-map more often. Rarely do the commentators (at least on espn-star) talk about what a captain is _trying_ to do, rather they talk about what he should be doing ie. what the gas-bag holding the microphone would have done in his last test (in 1875).Dhoni had a deep point and was enticing Bell to play that shot. It ultimately worked really well.
They used to show field maps a lot butit really seems to have gone out of fashion. Doesn't show off the latest piece of technology enough I guess.that's a very astute observation. aside -- I know Dhoni isn't an idiot, which makes his ridiculous fields to broad/swann even more frustrating -- why?! ffs.
It is more a reaction of 'Underrate India at your own peril'. Also after the first test, the English media and former English players (so called experts) were portraying the team as if it is the most perfect team to assemble on a cricket field ever and that India had no chance whatsoever.Just got back from Nottingham and a great day at the cricket.
I would have India on top, surviving that last session could be crucial, even if it was a little lucky. You need luck to survive in those conditions, and they did as much as they could to minimise the risks. Impressive batting.
I don't know why some people are seeing today as a vindication of "i told you England were overated/****". That is twice that England have had to bat in horrible conditions, they've done bloody well imo. If the sun comes out tomorrow India couldn't have it their way any more than this.
Tomorrow will be exciting, gutted i'm playing tbh. If India are bowled out for 300 England are still in this. It won't be easy batting last.
