he was averaging 35 as late his 43rd test with the bat.
Got 4 tons in 2016 which I would guess is the best year any of Stokes, Bairstow and Moeen have had with the bat. He's a far cry from that now

Fair enough didn't know that.
He was excellent in India at 4, I suppose they could have kept him there. Look I'm not saying he hasn't been mucked about in the order, I just think most others have been too, in our struggles to try to make the flotsam and jetsam of the top order look better.
He has batted well so far today, unlike he has for the last few years where he has been loose as ****.

fair enough yeah. possibly playing devil's advocate here a bit
funnily enough Steve Waugh never got more than 4 tons in a year. Did it 3 times though. Mark Waugh only managed it once
I remember thinking he was gonna kick on after 2016, it didn't seem like a fluke but an announcement Moeen was here. sucks it didn't pan out

Apparently he can't lol
Looked to me it hit the ground before he caught it. Small bounce even. But soft signal was out so perhaps not clear evidence to overturn.

Think these ones always have some portion of the ball touching the turf. Helps when fingers are clearly presented under the ball.
That side-on replay makes it look very clean though. Daylight between fingers and ground.
