Statistically the best over a 10 year period. To me that’s more significant than a specific peak which allows you to be #1 on the rankings at a specific time. There were players slightly older and younger than Crowe who you could argue were better but it’s still totally fair and true to say he was the best/top/most successful player overall from 1985-1995. Still reckon that’s big.
I get it but I doubt it’s that simple - would need to break the stats down a bit more. To discredit Crowe to that extent you’d have to be saying that 85-95 was an unusually poor era for batting. Would probably be more useful to compare the respective averages of KW/Crowe to the overall batting average for that era, rather than comparing to other elite batsmen only and then trying to work out who is and isn’t an outlier.that just means there wasn't any of MC's exact age group peers as good as KW, Kohli and Smith. You're rating MC higher because he didn't have as much competition in his exact age group, the way KW does.
hang on, you’re supposed to do it until the START of 1995 and then Crowe is top and with a way higher averageBatting records | Test matches | Cricinfo Statsguru | ESPNcricinfo.com

The era in question

Yep and then the question is what 54 was worth in that era vs what...60-something is worth in Kane’s peak era. It may well be that Kane is more standard deviations above the mean.Batting records | Test matches | Cricinfo Statsguru | ESPNcricinfo.com
