No you can't.
Well, if I was a betting man, I would fancy my odds then. Vincent will not get dropped from the Test side based on ODI form or whatever. He will be there for the 1st Test I'm sure.

Styris as a Test opener? Surely not. How about we convert Mills and Franklin into Test openers as well. Styris is a middle order batsman, and should bat there, and not open. Only because we now have some sort of depth in our batting doesn't mean we have to switch people to unfamiliar positions to accommodate others.

Vincent's last test score (IIRC) was 90 (or 91) vs Zimbabwe.

However, that was against Zimbabwe, and opening. Personally, I think he's suited to number 4 in tests.

Edit: Here, my XI for the first test v West Indies. I don't think they'd debut more than one player and probably stick with most of the team they used in the last test series in Zim.

Gee, who would expect me to make an XI in a NZ thread 8-)

1. J How
2. S Fleming (c)
3. S Styris
4. L Vincent
5. N Astle
6. J Oram
7. B McCullum (wk)
8. D Vettori
9. J Franklin
10. S Bond
11. C Martin

That's assuming that Astle is only out of the ODI time at the moment. Otherwise Fleming would be down to 3 with Styris at 5 and maybe Cumming brought back.

Just because it is outside the square there is no need to rubbish it. That is such a black and white way of thinking, 'Styris is a middle order batsman, and should bat there.'

What would be your XI then Ming? I would be interested to see who you believe should open the batting?

I would rather have Fulton than Astle although it is a bit of a tough decision. Styris is the unsung heroe of NZ cricket at the moment and I think he is the most consistent batsman we have at the moment and so therefore I think he would be ideal for opening

Hate to wander into kiwis terrority but wouldn't Michael Papps (when he's fit again) be worth another shot as an opener? It also gets you a reserve keeper as a small bonus.

Papps has been a bit unfortunate recently. He's been in great form for the last year through 'A' matches, for Canterbury and for the Academy but he keeps getting injured at the wrong time.

I think he's in the frame to play the tests versus the West Indies. He could partner Jamie How.

Yeah but if he's the most consistent I think he'll be wasted opening the batting. He seems to do very well at 3.

Totally forgot about Papps. But then, How isn't guaranteed to open the batting in the tests either?

I think Papps recall to the Test squad if How doesn't at least get one reasonable score in the test series. I'm geussing that he would though. if hes selected :)

Yeah but I wouldn't be surprised if the selectors went something like this:

1. Cumming
2. Vincent
3. H. Marshall
4. Fleming
5. Astle
6. Styris
7. Oram
8. McCullum
9. D Vettori
10. S Bond
11. C Martin

Let's hope they dont, and have faith in How.

I don't want to put the wood on him, but yes...he's developing a rather bad track record of injuries.

I'd drop Styris from the test team. He is never bowled and isn't a good enough batsman. I believe Fulton and How need to be tried now: we're only playing WI. It would also be worth trying Papps again, but later in the series if the batting is not performing at the top.

I wish the West Indies players read these forums.

That comment alone should be enough to make them want to thrash New Zealand. Sadly, there is no pride in West Indies cricket (bar four players).

It was not that long ago I recall that many said the same thing about NZ. Things are a little better these days.

I don't think Fulton and How will both debut in the same test.
