*Official* NZ Domestic Season

His figures are pretty economical too. The same can be said about Tuffey, 13 over for 25 runs, and two wicket.

current scores:
CD 139/5
Otago 153/7

What is there about How which makes him a test player? Has he got a certain signature about him? I.e. Jones and his 'leap' into the air. Or Macca getting out to lame shots.

I believe he does the limbo with the bat when he reaches 100.

I don't know about 'makes him a test player', but I'd say having perhaps the best pull shot in NZ cricket is one of his trademarks. He's certainly not a front-foot-orientated player like Papps, and I know Tim and I were a bit disappointed How didn't do better in SA where the pitches should've suited his game.

I had a look back at that tour today, with Alfonso Thomas picking him up 3 times and Albie Morkel twice (3/5 were LBs). I've never seen Thomas bowl but Morkel looked like a pretty average seamer in NZ, so perhaps How was just a bit out of form.

He scored 61 against one of the SA domestic sides in a warmup, but only averaging 14.4 in the three 'tests' is something Bracewell and co. might point to if they don't select him I imagine.

Why are bating averages usuall sub-30 for specialist batsmen?
What I'm saying is that I don't think How was simply out of his league in SA -it's more likely he was just rusty.

I certainly don't think the likes of Morkel would phase How in his current form.

From what I can gather, the S.A 'A' attack was no quicker than the NZ attack.

Certainly Morkel would have been no different to facing that of a Tama Canning type player.
How could have gone backwards after that disappointing series in South Africa, but he's learnt from it & come back very strongly for Central.

So who would make an NZ A team - designed to bring young players through seeing as certain provincial teams appear to be doing their best to thwart their talent.
and I think you just hit the nail on the head somewhat...............

IMO there is plenty of young talent in their early 20's just waiting to be properly harnessed, but it will depend on the State sides & 'A' series to continue to nurture these players to keep them going long enough until there is opportunities for them at the highest level of the game.............

there is already plenty of talk regarding the likes of Taylor, Sherlock, Davis & Ryder, & lately there is also talk of the likes of Shutte & Watling, & I'd add to that the likes of Broom, Nichol & Stewart. There are also a few 'older' players in B Martin, How, Fulton & McIntosh who also rate a mention.............

IMO the talent is there & these players are the current fututre of NZL cricket post the next WC.............

Some good news about Sherlock -

A talkback caller apparently said he's got bruising of his back rather than a stress fracture. Probably won't be bowling for the Cantabs until perhaps February at the earliest though.

Kent- I gather that you listen to Radio Sport a bit. Have you heard a guy ring up on talkback called Zane? He ususally rings every day. If so what do you think of his views on NZ cricket?...This question really applies to any NZ'er who listens to Radio Sport and have heard him.

Also just letting all you ppl outside of Wellington know there will be no play in the fourth day between Wgtn and Otago...It is fare bucketing down in Wellington so that match will be drawn.

So How has a pretty good pull on him huh. Did anyone see the Heralds pick for the ODI squad against SL this morning? Very predictable, but suppose there is no need to change it seeing as they are winning. However I am getting very very bored of seeing the same middle order - and the same middle order failing. Astle, Styris, Macca. Surely a home series like this is the chance to blood a new player? Perhaps try How and perhaps give canning a proper chance. Also I would like to see Mason extended a longer go in the national team.

I would consider Astle and Styrisas true middle order batsmen, but i think somebody ought to replace Styris for the next match, he's been having a really bad run of form. Mason did not bowl too well when he was given a chance and has so far in the domestic season has not shown wicket taking ability.

Yeah - who hasn't heard that guy! I prefer places like CW for generally more insightful talk about NZ cricket, but on the occasions I do have RS on I hear Zane a lot.

He always has a passionate opinion about something, with Richardson, Snedden and Bracewell among his pet hates it seems. He's eternally optimistic that we can play test cricket like Australia, but his campaign about Rigor being the root of all evil is ridiculous IMO.

He may get a bit carried away with his own theories, but I respect him for being more passionate about the game than most of the regular (rugby-leaning) hosts, and is a lot more lively than Andrew McLean and Mystery Morrison on their Cricket Club show.

I imagine Zane would wet himself with delight if he ever found CW. Rather than moan about the likes of rugby and golf getting special treatment in a ratings and advertising-driven pecking order (which I doubt will ever change), he should just come here IMO.

Mason has averages of 25 and 23 in first class and limited over. I think that shows over a number of years that he has taken wickets very consistently. He is up there with james franklin and better in the limited version of the game. Think he could be given a better go.

Yeah thats a pretty good summary of him. I just love his passion and am always interested in his views on the game although don't agree with his opinion of Richardson.

NZ Herald's squad -

Stephen Fleming (c), Nathan Astle, Mathew Sinclair, Scott Styris, Hamish Marshall, Craig McMillan, Chris Cairns, Jacob Oram, Brendon McCullum, Tama Canning, Daniel Vettori, Kyle Mills, Andre Adams, Ian Butler.

Why did Richard Boock name 14 players? Rather than picking players #13 and #14, they'll be back in their provincial sides won't they?

I'll be p*ssed if McMillan is included, that's for sure. No-one can argue his woeful form is too ***y to grace a State Shield ground at the moment! Forget making him 12th man - that would be like putting that Olsen twin on a diet. McMillan needs more cricket, not less!

ND 172/5, Hart actually scoring runs this year on 51* and hamish marshall 30*, yovich, watling and the rest of the tail(who can all bat) to come, 228 more runs to win though but i'm still hopeful :)
