*Official* NZ Domestic Season

Jesse Ryder hasn't started the season too well. I hope Vaughan Johnson isn't telling him to build an innings. From what I've seen of Ryder, he's best off playing his natural game & going after the bowlers.

hopes were also high for a good start to the season for the likes of papps, fulton, conrnelius, mcintosh, nicol, ryder(as you said) and taylor but none of them have had the starts to the season we were hoping for, since now is the time when players are putting their hands up for SL places i suspect none of them will play the tests, which is also why i think jamie how will.

There is obviously quite a bit of cricket still to be played though.
Wade Cornelius apparently bowls very quick but he probably needs time to get back into some form after what has been 2 seasons out of action.

Jamie How has obviously had a great start..BUT lets not forget what happened to Tim McIntosh last year after he bolted through the gates at the start of the season, only to be overtaken by Papps because he fell away at the end.

The great thing though is that we've actually got genuine batting talent coming through, hopefully some of it will show this season in both forms.

What has been so great about Jamie How this season is that he's scored centuries in both the Nth & Sth Islands which tends to suggest he really is in some genuine form. Apparently the Queenstown pitch was a fairly decent track although apparently batsmen had to really work for runs in the 1st innings.
And then in Napier, the pitch is supposedly a great batting track. But then again, he is facing Tuffey, Butler, Styris etc.

they all were genuine chances for the test series and i imagine if any of them put in good performances they would have been there or there abouts, one thing that looks good about jamie how is that he must have tremendous application and concentration abilities to be able to score three centuries in as many innings, something that NZ batsman are not generally known for, all be at domestic level.

agreed re How, however I'd say the chances of there being a middle order debutant in this season went south with Rigor's retirement.............unless the selectors take 6 batsmen & Styris / Astle fails while the top fires up..............

Yep I'd say it's about 70km southwest of Napier. It's in Central Districts' catchment area for FC cricket.

well jesse ryder proved that he still is the class young player everyone thought he was, currenty 72* and franklin 60* aswell as finishing with four wickets.
papps and mcintosh both got ducks lol with walmsley and mills striking, and ND one of better starts 108/2 orchard 37* and styris 22*.

there are player profiles, when on the match archive where it shows all the various years, at the top right hand corner of the page click on players, it even has under 19 'test' and 'odi' statistics.

Can someone give me the low down on Te Ahu Davis. I.e. what is so special about this kid? Also any other news about Sherlock? Has he stuffed his back big time? Also what is the hype about him?

Broom probably can't get into the Canterbury side...although that may change after today's performance.

Sherlock & Davis are 2 up & coming pace bowlers who apparently bowl well up into the high 140's. We should see both of them in action this season.

broom can't get in the team? that would suprise me because he had a very good season last year for someone so young, tim papps doesn't seem that special

Tim Papps is the keeper...he's been prolific in Canterbury club cricket with the bat.

Don't know if they'll hand Michael Papps the gloves considering his current form with the bat so im not sure where they'll fit Broom in...he could be out of form too of course.

Sounds like Sherlock's career could be in jeopardy before it has even begun.

I went down to the Basin and watched the last two sessions today. The weather was great and I joined about 60-odd people on the bank (including a couple of the more attractive domestic cricket-watchers I've ever seen!), looking out on a Basin pitch that was especially good by pre-Christmas standards, and with pretty decent carry to boot.

Although he had ideal conditions and a pretty friendly Otago attack, I was really impressed with Ryder's innings. With a short-sleeve sweater on he looks like Craig McMillan's mirror image from a distance, but the way he left and defended decent balls before using his fast hands to punish some of the crap dished up was a pleasure to watch. Sadly just as he'd help dig Wellington out of trouble and was hitting his stride (72 off about 120 balls I think), the umpire fired him on an LB which Ryder was very keen to suggest he inside-edged.

Franklin batted well until he threw his wicket away with a mistimed lofted drive to mid-on, although as I alluded to earlier this Otago attack isn't very flash and Wellington will be kicking themselves that they didn't get 1st innings points I imagine. Jeff Wilson bustled in off 14 paces, Todd was medium-slow, McCullum bowled some tight offspin without turning anything, and Redmond couldn't put his leggies on a decent length. The pick of the bowlers was James McMillan, who took 4/36.

A friend I was watching with today challenged me to a $100 bet on who will be the first out of Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder to play test cricket (he wanted Ryder). It's interesting to compare the two - IMO it'll largely come down to whether Ryder shows more discipline off the field or if Taylor can show more discipline on it.

People definitely shouldn't think Ryder is just some young Polynesian boozehound who goes for everything like it's kilitkiti - going back to his younger days he's shown evidence of some genuine concentration. I was recently told about an innings he played against an Aussie academy side, where he batted an entire day for 150. Sadly I'm still waiting to hear about Taylor doing anything like that, ever!

Yeah, Ryder did indeed score 180 against a Commenwealth Academy side 2 years ago..apparently it was a phenomenal innings.

I think if he gets stuck in this season he could push for a spot on the tour to Zim & S.A
