I went down to the Basin and watched the last two sessions today. The weather was great and I joined about 60-odd people on the bank (including a couple of the more attractive domestic cricket-watchers I've ever seen!), looking out on a Basin pitch that was especially good by pre-Christmas standards, and with pretty decent carry to boot.
Although he had ideal conditions and a pretty friendly Otago attack, I was really impressed with Ryder's innings. With a short-sleeve sweater on he looks like Craig McMillan's mirror image from a distance, but the way he left and defended decent balls before using his fast hands to punish some of the crap dished up was a pleasure to watch. Sadly just as he'd help dig Wellington out of trouble and was hitting his stride (72 off about 120 balls I think), the umpire fired him on an LB which Ryder was very keen to suggest he inside-edged.
Franklin batted well until he threw his wicket away with a mistimed lofted drive to mid-on, although as I alluded to earlier this Otago attack isn't very flash and Wellington will be kicking themselves that they didn't get 1st innings points I imagine. Jeff Wilson bustled in off 14 paces, Todd was medium-slow, McCullum bowled some tight offspin without turning anything, and Redmond couldn't put his leggies on a decent length. The pick of the bowlers was James McMillan, who took 4/36.
A friend I was watching with today challenged me to a $100 bet on who will be the first out of Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder to play test cricket (he wanted Ryder). It's interesting to compare the two - IMO it'll largely come down to whether Ryder shows more discipline off the field or if Taylor can show more discipline on it.
People definitely shouldn't think Ryder is just some young Polynesian boozehound who goes for everything like it's kilitkiti - going back to his younger days he's shown evidence of some genuine concentration. I was recently told about an innings he played against an Aussie academy side, where he batted an entire day for 150. Sadly I'm still waiting to hear about Taylor doing anything like that, ever!
