Vettori gone - again my feeling is that he was slightly unlucky re stride & turn - 2 50/50 decisions gone with AUS????

but all over red rover................

Seven LBWs in that innings. It's something people miss a lot in the Australian bowling - great strategic initiatives.

McGrath and co have been thwarted in the past by defensive batting tactics which involve leaving everything outside off stump and trying to survive and take on the other bowlers. In India, the Australian quicks bowled very straight, particularly McGrath and Gillespie, resulting in lots of lbws and bowleds and a lot less reliance on making the batsman play outside off when trying to score. After New Zealand used similar tactics in the first innings, McGrath and Gillespie straigtened up a lot in the second innings and grabbed a bunch of lbws early in the innings, plus a few others (two in particular) that should have been given out but weren't.

After they did the early damage, Warne bowled magnificently. Marshall got his second gem in the match, and the tail looked pretty much clueless against him.

I know it's a bit early for post mortems, and I don't want to talk about the bowling until I see how they step up to the mark in comparison to what AUS has been able to do..........

but as for the batting..............
firstly let me say that IMO they must stay with a 6-4 split and not revert to a 5-5 - reason being is that although the batting has not improved their 1st & 2nd innings performances having the 6th batsman (and being 'short' on their 1st innings total), the 4 bowlers (+Astle) have improved their performance - esp considering their lack of experience & leader for the seam attack.........
while the bowling copped the flack in the ODIs they have not let NZL down by the way they (Vettori & Astle) were able to stop AUS from taking a 1st innings lead..........

Marshall is the 1st name down and in ink - if Flem continues to open then Marshall stays at #3 - then #4 if Flem doesn't.....
Flem obviously stays as Captain - I'd like to move him from opening as he's out of touch, but I can't see anyone else to do the job in this series...........
Cumming has showed he has good temperament in the 1st innings - didn't see the 2nd so he stays...........
didn't see anything of Vincent so I can't comment with any conviction - supposedly looked ok in the 1st innings & got a poor decision that was later balanced by Martyn's dismissal - so he'd stay as well........
Astle played his best Test innings since his return in his 1st dig - so he stays..........
Macca....................back to his old self IMO & would be my candidate to be changed..........

so far as possible replacements - IMO we need another player of the same style as Marshall - and thinking outside the square I'd be seriously thinking about James if he's of the same style.............rather than looking at more 'hitters' or stroke makers atm.........

IMO the NZL seam bowlers will struggle to have the same impact as their AUS counterparts because of their style..............

wouldnt be surprised if lee replaces kasper in the next match. 118/2 off 35 overs arent the best figures, after all.

and another 'feeling' re the close calls - the ones that are crucial regarding the match seem to favour not only the champions (team / bowler / batsman), but also the more attacking / aggressive momentum.............

eg McCullum seems unlucky considering the angle & movement, but it was crucial regarding the NZL chances of resurrecting some sort of total.................

and no it's not sour grapes as anyone who knows how critical I've been re the NZL side for some time can tell you..........

bottom line you've got to be doing the right stuff to raise the question in the first place, which means in some ways you are somewhat responsible for your own luck - do it often enough and the odds will tend to favour you...........

wishful thinking IMO - Kasper was better than Dizzy in the 1st innings - but neither he nor Pidgeon got much of a chance once the Dizzy & Warne show got under way...............

unless there is an injury you'd be waiting for the 3rd Test at best..........

Just opened Cricinfo and read the title 'Aussies lose chasing 132' - wasn't until a few seconds later that i realised it read 'Aussies lose Hayden chasing 132'. :p

NZ aren't at full strength at the moment are they?

Whether they are or aren't, they're an absolute disgrace to cricket if they can't take this game to the fifth day from here.

Looks as if it will be wraped up today.

So do you actually think we are a disgrace to cricket?

And Fleming should have been out to the first ball of the day. Lets not leave anything out.

I knew someone would bring this up. Don't forget that Gillespie only took 3 wickets for the game - are you going to replace him too?

There it is... 9 wicket win.

New Zealand will be bitterly dissapointed with the 2nd innings effort, didnt deserve to lose like that.

New Zealand had Australia on the ropes only to let Warne get a 5-fer and lose the match.

But they managed to :p. It was really dissapointing effort, i was away for the first two days and come back to see NZ back to normal and throwing away the chances that they had after making 433.
From the little I have seen Marshall looks to be the most impressive batsman from the New Zealand team and Vettori is the only bowler who seems to be troubling the Aussies.
Fleming doesn't look suited to opening and is majorly out of form, which I think is starting to effect his captaining and the team as he knows he is out of form with the bat and the lack of confidence is starting to show.
Cumming looks good with the bat and in the field and seems better suited to the longer form of the game than the one dayers.

At what time did NZ have AUS on the ropes?

When they made 431 (I think) and Marshall made his maiden test ton, that was when Australia was on the ropes. And when Ponting and Clarke got out in quick succession, it took tonnes from Katich and Gilchrist to take Australia off the ropes and into a match winning situation.
