The last thing we need is to turn into one of those "at least we batted out the overs" sides. Keep with the ****ing rate of get out trying, we're supposed to be decent at this limited overs stuff.

Exactly what I'm getting at. I'd rather see us go down swinging than see 250-7 off 50 overs. If we win 1 of those 5 games going hell for leather, great. The public deserves to see them give it a red-hot go, in my opinion.

I agree completely. I can understand why Guptill fell into that trap but it's still a trap that a good player needs to avoid. Wouldn't use the word 'selfish' though.

Have been thinking that Williamson should captain until the end of the ODI series but if Taylor's still unavailable for tests there's no question that McCullum should be the captain.

Am I the only person who though that Samuels played a selfish innings post 80, and cost us a chance to really post a good score. Playing for your hundred at that point in the innings is not acceptable. If not for Sammy (cant believe I said that) we would have been struggling.
I had the same thought. He was definitely playing for his ton and not caring about the team situation.

Issue no.1 for NZ is Gayle. We have to find a way of getting him out early or we will always struggle. So we need more aggressive, wicket taking bowling at the start of the game. Oram's bowling looks innocuous and he hasn't taken a single wicket in the first two games.
So...

Guptill
Nicol
McCullum
Williamson
Flynn
Watling
NcCullum
Bracewell
Southee
Mills
Nethula

As seen elsewhere McCullum not likely to play in ODI tonight. Fair enough - jetlag sucks. Don't want McCullum to return to the team amid great fanfare and score a duck.

I'd like to see Brownlie play ahead of Latham. Maybe it's just me but I struggle to understand how Brownlie can go from hero to crappo so quickly, and how he cannot seem to score runs in ODIs. Latham is pretty young and inexperienced and he looks it.

Wright also mention Boult as a possibility to try to get Gayle. I like Boult but think that's a terrible idea - there's just a touch of 'along-the-wicket' about his bowling and typically likes to pitch it up and look for swing. There probably wouldn't be much swing so IMO he would be fodder for Gayle. Would rather Bracewell. Oh wait, I just read the article again and it says Bracewell has a back niggle - I must have missed that before.

Also says Taylor may be available for the final ODI - great news.

So we have:

Guptill
Nicol
Flynn
Williamson
Brownlie
Watling
NcCullum
Oram/Boult
Southee
Mills
Nethula

Latham is the only other fit player

I think the theory is that we need a genuinely good delivery to get rid of Gayle, so having someone who can swing the ball away from him is more likely to produce that than Bracewell or Southee drifting it into his pads. Once he gets going it really doesn't matter who's bowling, they'll all be cannon fodder.

Bracewell would be the most likely to dismiss him at the moment. I remember a ball that O'Brien got Gayle out with in Napier, in the Test in 2010 or so - it was a snorter that lifted and took his edge. I don't see a pitched-up ball swinging or not, as Boult bowls, causing any issues.

Can anyone recall in any form of cricket, a bowler being picked to negate a certain batsman? If Gayle wasn't playing, Boult may not have got a run

Haha, would play Chris Martin in that case, reckon he's the guy most likely to cause issues to Gayle, swinging the ball away from his hitting arc.

Would like see Brownlie replacing Flynn for this game. Flynn was given enough chances at the ODI level and his average speaks about his performances. Is n't Brownlie a better technique batsman than Flynn?

Bravo and Sammy donating their match fees to Runako Morton's widow. Lovely gesture.
