***Official*** New Zealand in the West Indies 2014

Credit to Sodhi. Still bowls a lot of crap balls, but looked a lot more dangerous than Craig.

My opinion about NZ playing two spinners hasn't changed. The pitch needs to be the most ridiculous turner in history to justify it. Even then I'd think twice.

Which spinner you choose is a whole other question.

If you're going to pick one you pick Sodhi. Craig wasn't a threat whatsoever on this pitch, atleast Sodhi can still take wickets when the pitch isn't suiting spin.

Good to see McCullum take the responsibility to open. I like that from the captain.

As Howsie says, the greatest thing ever would be for him to score big and decide to stay as opener.

It was much more Hesson than McCullum who developed the strong aversion to the idea though, imo Cribbage. As long as Hesson's there, you won't get your ideal XI.

McCullum had his manager saying it was ridiculous that he wasn't opening, back when Nicol was doing it in 2012.

yeah, especially with Williamson in the side.

Sodhi bowled some pretty good deliveries. I know it was declaration batting, but the wickets of Blackwood and Chanderpaul weren't due to aggressive batting.

Craig is the far better bowler when the pitch is turning, and as far as I'm concerned New Zealand shouldn't be selecting a specialist spinner at all when it isn't.

Yeah I agree, but Hesson would've had to sign off on this too.

People don't have to be mods to call out what they think is **** posting.

I'd remind everyone, though, that that cuts both ways. Go after people aggressively because you think they're being dumb and you should expect to see similar in return. This thread has probably been under-moderated thus far (frankly, because most of us have better things to do) but that's not a license to go nuts on people you don't like.
Sorry, who is this aimed at? And who went nuts & got aggressive with who? Why do I get the awful impression this is aimed specifically at one of us and the aggressive & more personal post seems to have been conveniently ignored? Especially considering I choose NOT to get personal and remained relatively passive if you read that whole interaction. No problem with the modding, but for heavens-sakes, be consistent. You say it cuts both ways yet it's interesting that of all the recent posts, you choose to quote that innocuous post above, and not the aggressive and personally one. Please make this clear so we know who has supposedly gone over the line.

Who would you play as fourth seamer?
I think I'd just play both Neesham and Anderson. I've been a big critic of Neesham's bowling for longer than most, but between both of them and Williamson you've got enough variety and options to make sure none of them are over-burdened on the bowling front and I certainly don't think you lose anything by not playing a spinner, as Williamson's realistically as good as any as long as he doesn't have to bowl long spells (which he wouldn't with six bowling options on a pitch that wasn't taking turn). I'd revise this policy if someone like Henry or Milne began to really demand selection as well as maintain fitness, but for now I think it'd probably be the best balance when turn was unlikely for the whole match.

I think the Sodhi/Craig question on non-turners would be closer than some are making out, too. Sodhi is definitely more likely to actually produce genuine wicket taking balls on non-turners as I've admitted all along, but you shouldn't really be relying on your spinner to take many in those conditions anyway and Craig would do a far better job of supporting the actual threats by bowling economically and keeping the pressure on. I'm not convinced that picking someone who's going to average 40-45 and go at 5rpo is really a better option than picking someone who's going to average 45-50 and go at 3rpo when you actually have a good new ball pair who you're basing your attack around.

I don't think he did, Brendon was desperate to go back up the order as he felt he had been wronged by John Wright, so Hesson just pushed Flynn.
By "this", I mean this innings. Hesson would've had to sign off on McCullum's move to open right now.
