*Official* New Zealand in India 2010

What really should throw a pie in the face of that over-rated statistic known as economy rate is the performance of the NZ bowling. Mills, Tuffey and McKay have bowled 28 overs, and gone for 160 runs, but took seven of ten wickets off a strong batting lineup. That's not a good economy rate, but the wickets chipped away have kept the team total under 300, which is remarkable. Something to think about, especially for those running the Indian team.

In a strong team, a proper #7 is a multi-skilled player, not a specialist batsman. India have had proper #7's in the past, but they were either too good to be there and ultimately stagnated (Kaif and Uthappa) or just plain dire (Sunil Gavaskar Jr and Dinesh Mongia). In fact, the #7 position may have ruined Kaif and Uthappa.

We need to give the likes of Saha and Ashwin more chances. Ashwin is a far, far, far better batsman than most Indian tailenders, and better than what your closing line says. He's a genuine all-rounder for TN, and a strike bowler, and in the final overs, riding on an impressive show by the top six, he's an asset. India would be well served with at least three Ashwins among five bowlers. They've largely got the team right (Vinay should be a starter, while Munaf, nowhere near the bench) and should persist with this set, building on strengths and ironing out flaws. They need a little time.
Being a good fielder and being able to keep isn't multi-skilled? Uthappa has been used as a floater too much. Sometimes they ask him to open and sometimes finish.. that too in the handful of games he gets. He hasn't played an ODI since mid 08.. that's over 2 years. I don't rate Saha at all and Ashwin's batting is overrated. He's a fine spinner and I would pick him based on that alone. What I want is someone who can take you across the line when your chasing about 80 odd with 11-12 overs to go and 3-4 wickets in hand. India generally do well when they bat first, so accelerating when batting first isn't that hard (our top 6 usually fire more often than not). It's when we chase that we struggle despite stacking up on hard hitting batsmen (countless examples of this). Vinay is better in the londer format the ODI's.. especially on these pitches.

Tripe almost all of the wickets were gifted at the end.

Crikey, what a straight drive by Guppy. His second nice one of the innings.

EDIT: Then he slams another one to the ropes. Great to watch when he's playing these shots.

Shots like that make me wish I could have Guptill's babies!

Argh How has looked so scratchy, you can see the change in confidence between international and domestic (including champs league) for him

Guptill needs to learn how to rotate the strike. ****ing hell 20 (24) and 5 boundaries. Always been a big problem for him.

Nehra to How, FOUR, What a mess-up from Sreesanth at deep backward square-leg! IT was clipped to him and he let it right through! Nehra has a whimsical look on his face. The camera ****s to Gambhir. Surprisingly, no one abused!
Perhaps they meant 'shifts'?
