 Where's Kabir and Kadeer?
No Ben Smith?

No, instead you drop someone who's actually bowling quite well now he's got his rhythm and is also a much better bet as an 8 than Hoggard.

In his place a superfluous 5th seamer.

Id drop Anderson and put Bell in myself as he has got a fair few wickets for Warks dispite only been a part time medium pacer.....

It's bizarre, but he appears to have changed himself into a genuine option with the ball (in the First Innings of our recent destruction of Worcestershire he bowled more overs than any other bowler!)

He was also trusted with a full 10 against the (admittedly mediocre) Kent side yesterday.

Jesus Maddy is just a medium pacer, bowls about 70/75mph at best. I wonder if the pitch played a part.
If it catches the finger in the right (or wrong) spot, I don't think pace has much of an effect.

True, i was more thinking a batsmen of his quality shouldnt get hit by a medium pacer with their reaction times. I mean seeing Batty floor Sarwan showed its accuracy not pace that matters :P but maddy shouldnt be capable of wrapping batsmen on the hands, unless of course it spit like a cobra :)

Come on! Even a university player can hit a batsman if he bowls a good ball, and anyone playing for a domestic team should be capable of bowling a good ball once in a while. :p

Maddy is a batsmen though, he just bowls the occasional seam up dobby medium pace. He's only about 5 foot 5 in height.

so the NZL batsmen have had some batting practise, with Flem, Macca, Cairns & Vettori all getting 50+, while Papps & Styris continue to struggle.........

with the concerns regarding Macca's injury I'd not risk him for the Test regardless of wether he's done any more damage or not.......only a couple of days to go & I'm sure he'd find life more difficult agianst an int attack........worst case scenario would be to damage it further on day 1 & become a passenger for the rest of the Test - not what is needed when you are chasing a win to square the series.........

some suggestion that Oram may also be struggling to overcome his side strain, so injuries may well decide the team selection...........particularly if Oram can only bat................

would the selectors consider the following.........

Richardson, Fleming, Astle, McCullum, Oram, Cairns, Hopkins,Vettori, Mills, Tuffey, Martin..........

with both McCullum & Oram playing as batsmen & Mills coming in as the 4th bowler.............

not much choice so far as the batting goes, unless they go with an injured Macca or either of the out of form Papps & Styris..........or call someone else in...............

Would Oram play as batter only? he wouldnt be allowed a sub fielder and if he has a side strain he wont be throwing himself around the field. Also he wouldnt be allowed a runner if he aggrivated the injury during the game.

the only reason I could see this happening is because they've played Cairns as a specialist bat in ODIs..............and they're short on batting options ATM.........it depends on how well he pulls up - he may be only be restricted so far as his bowling is concerned, in which case I think they will want him for his batting..........

either way the selection prospects look a headache so far as having a solid batting lineup is concerned - lots of pressure on Richardson, Fleming & Astle to perform well.............and on the others to be able to form partnerships & not just score quick runs.......

Why dont we just ring in one of the many players playing league cricket in England, Like Taylor, Sinclair, How i would say those guys would be playing over there same as some of our fringe bowlers like Butler and and the likes.

But from a selfish point of view i would like to see Hopkins and McCulum lpay in the same team but i would doubt that Brendon would be happy to give up the gloves.

It's a big ask to ask someone to step up from playing League Cricket to play an international test match in the space of a few days.

For The Bunse? (= Bunsen burner = nice little earner)

David Brent let me get that one in about 5 seconds. I must remember to thank him...

Spearman left for the UK looking for a 9-5 job as a banker, but ended up playing county cricket instead. His grandmother's(?) Englishness allowed him his dream job - being well-paid to give trundlers and lazy imports the canings they deserve. Now he spends his winters back in the Hawke's Bay, and will either be sipping the local wine in a deck chair or belting 85 off 40 balls in the State Shield final as Central Districts' 'import' (10 per side must be available for the Black Caps I believe).

i don't think Spearman is up to Test cricket. he was given numerous chances at the top level. He had a few good innings here and there, but more often than not he failed. I would prefer to see Sinclair join the touring party before him, even if he has to fly all the way over from New Zealand.

Uh oh - McMillan retired hurt 68.

Wonder if that finger got hit again. I guess when I wake up the radio news will tell me:

a) it wasn't serious.
b) Hopkins/Sinclair/Marshall are being rushed in.
Has to be Sinclair IMO because he got runs when he was called up as a 11th hour replacement.

Had it been a 16 man squad, Sinclair would have just pipped Peter Fulton for the reserve batsman spot IMO.

Look's like Papps has a very good chance of being playing in the 2nd Test.

With regards to Oram: If he isn't capable of bowling in comfort, then he shouldn't play. He is important enough to the Black Caps in both form's of the game, I wouldn't pick him if he can't bowl.

Question, is Gareth Hopkins good enough to play as a batsman?

I'm leaning toward's no.

Didn't he start as a batsman who could bowl? Even as of now, his hard-hitting batting seems more effective than his same-old-medium-pace bowling.

depends on the wicket...whatever it is i wouldnt consider dropping hoggard at headingly and i wouldnt consider playing 5 seamers either.

does mccullum have any experience in domestic cricket as an opener?if he does i think he should open the batting with richardson with fleming down at 3.
