I would actually prefer Martin to Butler. I still think Martin is more likely to take wickets..or at least create some pressure.

butler would be a disaster against the aussies i reckon but i don't think chris martin would be the most succesful bowler either but should be more penetrable than butler(basically what tim said).

What is your opinion of Peter Fulton? His stat sheet shows an average of 40 in both Tests and ODI's.

Why are none of Ian Butler and those tearaway quicks that another poster mentioned picked for the ODI's? The team they're facing are really no opposition!

Chris Martin? Not sure.

I think it will be Oram, Butler and Franklin, with Vettori as our main weapon.

I know this has been brought up already on this thread, but IMO NZL will stick to their current 50 - 50 bat / bowl split, in which case there would be room for both Butler & Martin v AUS...........

particularly now that they are likely to be without their primary wicket taking seam bowlers of the past few seasons, with both Bond & Tuffey out........the attack looks very much like v ENG, which was without a spearhead...........

wasn't aware that Fulton had actually made his full debut in either form of intnl cricket..............could you be referring to his 1st class career stats?????

Something like...

Richardson
Papps
Fleming
Styris
Astle
Oram
McCullum
Vettori
Franklin
Butler
Martin

Marshall/Sinclair
Wiseman
#14 (Mills, Adams, etc.)

I'd lean towards Marshall over Sinclair. It's hard to see both (two non-opening bats) on the bench in a squad of 14, with Bracewell making noises that Wiseman will be an option to play in Adelaide.

I like the way Marshall used the pace of bowlers in his SA test and against Shoaib and co, although I wasn't convinced by the way he was playing spin on Wednesday. I have a feeling Warne will embarrass him if he keeps playing back to it, although Sinclair has a few demons of his own regarding the Aussie attack.

i don't think to many people will share the same opinion as me but i would rather have craig mcmillan in the middle order for the aussie series, he has experience against them and has hit a couple of decent scores vs them(from memory) and he generally does well in comeback matches because he wants to cement a spot in the team.

1st Test(my team)

Richardson
Papps
Fleming*
Styris
McMillan
Astle
Oram
McCullum+
Vettori
Franklin
Martin

Sinclair
Marshall
Butler

a bit thin on bowling but i do not think another bowler will make a hell of a lot of diffference against the aussies, best to beef up the batting and play for draws if wins cannot be manufactured(likely).

One thing I will say is that McMillan does play Warne probably the best out of any of the NZ batsmen.

yep you're right.............I don't agree with you........ :D

not re Macca getting a spot (even if your stats are right)........IMO Macca has only performed recently towards the end of a series when his spot has been in jepardy, and similarly he does not strike me as batting for the team / innings too often lately...........

and certainly not re your tactics for the series - stack the batting & play for draws..............IMO that's the very mistake so many sides make v AUS - they go into the series already on the back foot.................

better to have your own game plan to win and then take it to them IMO..............

if Oram & Franklin can keep it tight, then Butler could be useful by being in their faces (like he did in ENG) - even if he does conceed runs - just as that's Lee's job for AUS & Harmison's for ENG.........WIN uses the same tactic but they tend to leak runs at both ends atm.............whereas the PAK quicks tend to bowl more of a regulation / fuller length to get the ball to swing...........

oh God I hope they aren't serious about Wiseman going to AUS for 1 Test!!!!!!! Furthermore the way that BAN climbed into him on a regular basis on 'proper' spinner's pitches, would tend to suggest that he'd get more of the same & moreso as Adelaide isn't exactly a true spinner's track in comparison.........

I agree that Marshall likes the ball coming onto the bat, and I'm hoping that the extra pace & bounce in AUS will allow him to play with more confidence v spin - even from Warne...........

correct me if I'm wrong but aren't wrist spinners generally quicker thru the air & off the deck than finger spinners??????

I would think that most off spinners (though this of course depends on the bowlers style) are a bit quicker through the air, as the Leggie tosses it up a bit more. But theres always exceptions, like Anil Kumble

just a thought on Bracewell's supposed favorite sons - Mills & Marshall.......

IMO it could be based upon a tactical decision on the type of players they are, rather than any reflection on who they are................

by this I mean that Marshall is not an aggressive stroke maker, but uses the ball coming onto the bat to score, while also being very quick between the wickets and a good partnership batter - something the NZL batting lineup has been criticised for lacking...............

Mills is a swing bowler who bowls at about the same sort of pace as Martin & is generally quicker than the likes of Oram, Tuffey & Franklin...........could be he is trying to mix / vary the attack to avoid having 3 seamers all RMF at about the same pace...............

I'd love to see Franklin develop another yard of pace as he's got the height to do so - NZL's answer to Pathan?????? while with Mills he could be looking for our version of Damien Fleming perhaps??????????

bottom line in their favor being their experience at ODI level as opposed to any other options available at this time...............

if so then good on him for trying something even if they are more likely to be squad members rather than certain starters at this stage..........

Just heard that Sinclair will probably miss the 1st OD against BAN after rolling his ankle - perhaps opening up the door for McCullum to open or Fulton to play.

A possible XI:

Astle
McCullum
Marshall
Styris
McMillan
Cairns
Harris
Adams
Vettori
Franklin
Mills

[Fulton, Sinclair, Butler]

There's no doubt that's what Bracewell thinks - he's said before that he views Mills as the only consistent outswing bowler in NZ. Not sure about being the same pace as Martin though - I'd hope with a Kookaburra ball Martin can get back into the high 130's.

The problem with Mills is his swing only goes one way and comes early from the hand, meaning good batsmen follow the shape and play it with ease.

Well it's only a 2 test series, so I don't really have a problem with picking a player with just one venue in mind. I do have a problem with how many times Hayden, Martyn, Gilchrist etc. might loft Wiseman over the short square boundaries in Adelaide though!

Perhaps that's Bracewell's cunning plan to get them slogging across the line.

Hmm...the grumpy guests!

I have to admit the John Mitchell comparison is a pretty good fit when I think about it -

* both are former players that honed their new craft in England
* both wanted total control selection-wise, and have been accused of playing favourites (Rueben Thorne, Kyle Mills)
* both have axed established players that arguably rested on their laurels (Christian Cullen, McMillan)
* both are fairly young in coaching terms.
* both have a precise, almost defensive style when being interviewed.

What a bloody disgrace. It's as though the team thinks they are the #1 team in the world. It also smacks of Martin Crowe's arrogance during the 1991 Zimbabwe tour.

The attitude of the team has definately changed since Bracewell arrived. That's for sure.
