Didn't look a good pitch there in Alexandra - looked tired with 4 or 5 batsmen bowled when the ball didn't bounce as much as expected.

Old school pitch that one, the sort of pitch that explained why Barry Cooper, the unluckiest batsman of his generation (the 80s), still only averaged 28ish in domestics.

I remember he came out of retirement about 93/94 and starred for ND in the Shell Cup. His little medium pacers were hugely effective on the slow Blake Park wicket (before the Bay Oval redevelopment). Cairns was the only guy who managed to get hold of him.

17* (19) is a bit disappointing from KNB, who biffed a 14-ball 50 a few seasons back.

Finally some semblance with the selections, Ben Sears has been very good in a stamp sized ground.

CD top order struggling and at Pukekura park. Shame it's not on TV but the game is live on radio sport. Some way to follow the game.

Reckon Jamieson will be getting a T20I callup after this effort. Sure the Aces have been pretty arse, but when you get 6/7 on the back of a strong couple of years in domestix, it's the kind of thing that makes selectors take notice.

Debbie Hockley.. How bad. Wonder if McConchie can get some runs today, his record is horrible.

Wait for our main man Jamieson to come out and put a few over the fence.

The sooner Jamieson is playing international cricket the better, those are insane figures really.

Great spell by Ben Sears, 4 for 14 off 4. Pretty sharp and very accurate. Glad he got few chances with the firebirds. Michael Bracewell is looking very dangerous at the top of the order. He may be close to Black Caps T20 side. I think he should have opened and batted like this in one dayers.

Canterbury were so bad. Bowling was horrendous and batting even poorer barring McConchie. When did they get so bad?

Any speedgun readings on Sears? He's always been rated as being at the quicker end of fast-medium spectrum, but he's been stagnating in club cricket for so long I wouldn't be surprised if he's 138 k's flat out.

I didn't pay much attention to the speed but he was bowling hard length, getting the ball into the right handers at good pace. From memory he had a long run up with all hands/legs. Used to generate probably higher pace but was inconsistent with line and length. Now he looks more like Mark Wood, short run up (maybe 10-12 yards) and is more consistent with line and length without compromising too much pace. Likely he's bowling at mid 130s to late 130s. He's a bit wiry right now but with age he will get stronger and will be able to bowl over 140 consistently. He needs to be given good run and not picked once in a while. You can't learn much playing at club cricket or at trainings.

The question is whether Wellington cricket will let that happen? The biggest problem for cricketers coming out of Wellington is that they are disadvantaged if they are younger. It doesn't matter they are better than the existing ones but they need to be at least late 20s to get consistent chances. Firebirds invest a lot on journeymen and sacrifice young talents. Age should not be a barrier for playing any sport. If they are good enough they should be playing but with Firebirds this rule only applies if you are older. If you are younger, then you are at the bottom of the barrel for picking. Again it's proved home grown talent is quite good but they just don't want to give them opportunities and shun them without giving opportunities. When given opportunities these guys have actually done better than the blokes borrowed from elsewhere. Lauchie Johns, Ben Sears, Andrew Fletcher, Rachin Ravindra all have done way better than some of the borrowed players over the years. The rule with firebirds is if you're home grown you have to prove you are good enough for years but when you are an outsider you don't have to prove anything as long as you have had some reputation in the past or should be near 30s

Let me put it this way, if you are Ben Sears you have to prove in the very first game that you are good enough otherwise they will bin him. If it's Michael Bracewell, Malcolm Nofal, Devon Conway or Adam Hose, then no worries. They can be mediocre or fail and still keep their place. You see the logic? Michael Bracewell has been going great guns this year for sure but imagine if Rachin Ravindra or Andrew Fletcher or Lauchie Johns had failed as many times as Michael Bracewell did last year (from memory he probably score 1 or 2 fifties over couple of seasons) they will have no contract or will barely appear in the playing list. There needs to be some level playing field for the players. Ben Sears was good enough to play all the games this year but they kept him out for good number of games. I'm hoping with the kind of performances Andrew Fletcher, Rachin Ravindra, Ben Sears, Lauchie Johns have put in, the up coming players get a good look in and it should not be a disadvantage if they are too good at a younger age or they are home grown.

Kuggeleijn 4-16. Where dem haterz at?
I quite like Kuggeleijn, he can bat as well. He's a bit inconsistent but his action is slightly awkward and harder to sight the ball out of the hand which makes him quite effective. Would have preferred Hamish Bennett but Kuggs isn't all that bad. The fast bowling choices are way too many at the moment in NZ. Perhaps can donate half a dozen to other countries and still have another extra half a dozen left in the country warming the bench.
