Now if it (the decision to bat first) was purely because he knew his team needed the batting practice, all well and good, that would be a mark of good captaincy. I'm adamant that if the Bangladeshis had been stuck in, we would have been looking at a comprehensive Australian victory.

The decision wasn't made for that reason, though, was it? It was made because Australia like to bat first, they are comfortable setting a target.

Now I've had a few hours to reflect on my scathing criticism of Ricky Ponting's decision, I'm not sure which school of thought is more correct...

1. Do what you feel comfortable with
2. Put yourself in the position of the opposition captain and ask yourself "what would I NOT want to do if I were him?"

Both have their merits, only one requires imagination.

Not a lot of movement out there for the curly haired one. At his pace I do think he might go for a few when players like Hayden & Gilly realise they can play across the line & not suffer.

I think Ponting opted to bat was because he would have thought oz would have ripped through the bangs and then oz only has little bat time ...as it turned out...well you know how it turned out...we will see tonight though how good there (bang) win was,if oz roll eng ,then the win will look mighty...bugger it even if we lose the bangs win was a mighty effort

That's no excuse. The Aussies have been proclaiming for over a week that they would not treat this match as a warm up but a proper league match. If that were the case then he should have bowled first and made short work of it. Instead he took the gamble to bat first when history has shown that the team batting second has won 100% of the time. No excuses, too bad!
