These two teams against each other offer the most high-quality opening exchanges in the tournament.

Rajasthan mounting a comeback of sorts here. Their bowling is their weak suit, but if Tyagi can continue developing without being called for chucking and Stokes chips in at crucial moments as usual, I can see them moving up the table.

Are there some stats anywhere on the proportion of strategic timeouts that are taken at any time other than defaulting to the latest possible time?

Do you think they're surplus to the format's demands?
Yes, although I can understand why they're there for commercial reasons.

It's more a case of it seeming silly to have flexibility in when they're taken if they're only ever taken because they have to be taken at that point.

I'm inclined to agree with you the way things stand. Though theoretically at least, as the game becomes more attenuated, the potential for tactical moves in terms of revised targets, bowling zones, etc should become greater and of greater import too.

You run out of superlatives describing Ben Stokes, but he is one of the most galvanizing cricketers I've ever seen. Won't be surprised at all if Rajasthan turn their campaign around in a big manner after his arrival.

Rajasthan should drop Smith so he can come back and play in the Shield. He's not doing anything in IPL anyway.
Reckon he didn't get rid of it in time. Stokes could make for a ginger Bond in his new suave look.
2 words I'd hoped to never hear together. Take a time-out.

Whatever it takes!!!

Showing off his galaxy brain captaincy, tbh.

If any of the Aussies still had any inkling that Smith could be made captain again, I think he is proving very easily that he should never be kept anywhere near that role. I honestly think doing it long term will impact his batting output. For a guy who already seems to live and breathe cricket, a bit like Sachin, he may need the time and space just being a regular player in the side affords.

Of course, he can always provide his inputs on strategy and tactics on the field but the entire pressure of fronting up to media and all the other captaincy responsibilities will be very tough on him IMO.
