Whatever it takes!!!
its why overthinking does not always work.. I mean I understand sending one leftie in coz it was in the 8th or 9th over or whatever. But when they sent in Dube, I just couldn't believe my eyes.
De Villiers should never be batting below 4 in that team in any circumstance. Criminal to bat him 6.its why overthinking does not always work.. I mean I understand sending one leftie in coz it was in the 8th or 9th over or whatever. But when they sent in Dube, I just couldn't believe my eyes.
No, I mean, it is bad to not bat him 4 in the first place. But I am more open to teams experimenting when they have some points behind them, but surely doubling down on an experiment that already failed was just silly.De Villiers should never be batting below 4 in that team in any circumstance. Criminal to bat him 6.
To add that point, we've scored at 6.9rpo in the middle orders where it has often been Kohli and ABDV batting. Actually done better then average in that phase today, whilst I think giving ABDV only 4 overs is not getting the most out of him, I can see why they played him at 5, Sundar and Dube effectively got the same result in the middle overs as the top 4 have been getting in the middle orders whilst it also increases the likelihood that ABDV would be batting at the death where he can make the real difference.Understand bringing in a left hander as I believe ABD has a weaker record v legspin and it feels like M Ashwin always does well v us and probably ABD so can understand sending in a left hander to negotiate the legspin overs. Worth mentioning too that ABDV had 46 balls of innings left v KKR and 81 today had he come in at 4 so it is very much a different situation he was coming into today if he batted at 4 then the last game that was cited by commentators.
I'm not such a big believer in best players bat at the top regardless of anything else - you look at RR - great top 3 on paper in Buttler, Stokes and Smith but get through that and their batting looks pretty vulnerable. I don't think you can complain about teams being too top heavy batting but then effectively demand that very thing as the commentators have especially when it's clear there are not many great middle order batsman around in the IPL - see the big fee that Maxwell demands each year despite his pretty average returns in the IPL and Uthappa and Tripathi are being shoved out of position into the RR middle order.
So with that in mind I can see why they brought in a left-hander at 4 - I might have picked Dube instead of Sundar as you have Morris and Udana as decent hitters (and that isn't just because of today) but I guess it depends on what they saw as a par score on a tricky pitch but defending tiny boundaries. I was perplexed they didn't bring him in at 5 though with 57 balls remaining at that point I presumed he wasn't at 100% fitness wise or something but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Well, whatever the thinking was, looks like they came up a good 30 runs short. Also, there's a case to be made for sustaining the momentum which he had from that crazy last knock. As good as he is, you can't expect him to come in with four overs left and start hitting out on these slow pitches. To add that point, we've scored at 6.9rpo in the middle orders where it has often been Kohli and ABDV batting. Would have been a worse choke then kxip's last game, which would have been a massive achievement to be fair.So close to maybe the most comically unnecessary choke of all time.
What were they doing, protecting their red ink? They were barely trying to hit a run for the last few overs? One hit in anger would have finished it, but they just arrogantly assumed they were going to win regardless of what shots they played. There were 9 wickets in hand! Play a shot ffs.
I so wish they'd lost that, it would have been hilarious.
Oh yeah not saying he should have come in at 6 just that I understand why he didn't come in at 4, I thought 57 balls remaining would give him and Kohli a few overs to get set before setting off at the end. With Kohli and ABDV understanding their importance to the RCB batting they tend to rein themselves in during the middle overs and that's probably especially likely with potentially 6.3 overs on the bounce of legspin. Also sending someone in at 4 with 81 balls remaining means unless they do awfully we don't miss out in the middle overs and potentially even score quicker (compared to if Kohli and ABD were in - we are the slowest scoring side in the middle overs after all) whilst still likely giving ABDV overs to get in before the death overs and a better chance of being there at the end when he can make the big difference then if he came in at the 7th over. If the number 4 batsman ends up playing 25/30 balls they've in most cases probably played a good innings anyway, if they get out early you've not lost out on much as plenty of finishers in our team even if Dube/Sundar get out early at number 4.Well, whatever the thinking was, looks like they came up a good 30 runs short.
