I meant as a new ball bowler.
Jacob Oram, who bowls in the 120's and sometimes in the 110's (not as often as Styris), opens the bowling for NZ. There are quite a few opening bowlers in ODI's who bowl at that pace, but are not too bad. BEsides, Yadav is reported to have swung the ball a lot during the Ranji trophy and he himself claims he's a swing bowler, so he may be a good choice with the new ball, given the form of other options.

yeah, it is worth a try, I suppose. Plus a good attacking seamer in the middle overs a pretty good option too... (Balaj or Pathan or Agarkar)

Balaji and Nehra average less han 20 (in Balaji's case, a lot less) when they coem in as change bowlers. What's your comment on a four-prong seam attack?

That sounds fine to me, except for the opener's slot. I think they'll opt for Laxman or Dhoni to partner with Sehwag, especially after seeing Laxman making big scores while opening (upon selectors request) in the practice matches.

Sehwag
Laxman
Dravid
Kaif
Yuvraj
Dhoni
Yadav
Pathan
Harbhajan
Zaheer
Balaji/Nehra

If they wish to include Raina, he should come at the #5 spot, followed by Yuvraj at 6 and Dhoni at 7, with Yadav missing out.

I actually would't mind to see Raina bat at 4 with Kaif at 3 following Sehwag and Laxman. Something like this...

Sehwag
VVS
Kaif
Raina
Dravid
Yuvraj
Dhoni
bowlers.

Or if they pick Yadav, then Dravid can bat 4 and Yadav can bat at 6 with Yuvraj in at 5...

yes, let's hope chappell and dravid think the same way. i'm not sure they'd put a debutant at the #4 spot ahead of a class performer like dravid, but let's see.

Acutally, they could do something where they put sehwag and yuvraj, with dravid coming in at 3, kaif at 4, raina at 5, yuvraj at 6, dhoni at 7. Then bowlers

How is Raina as a bowler? I think Rao would be ideal in SRL with his offspin and is also a very good middle order batsman.

Chappell mentioned Kumble's ODI bowling among the list of concerns to be addressed in his presentation to the board. Should be interesting to see how he goes about it.

Let's just hope he gets that right. He's too good a bowler to be averaging over 60 in a year. Maybe he can bowl better with a partner than alone.

The last thing the Indian team needs is yet another bits-and-pieces bowler. They're becoming a major liability now and have been rendered useless repeatedly.

Has anyone read the scoresheet of the practice match between the Indian side and the Lankan Board XI? Dhoni got a good score of 86 in 81, with a few big hits, three for six.Yadav and Irfan didn't do so well, getting 17 and 12, though at a good rate. The final score was 247, with Kaif scoring 52 off 79- he needs to run more between wickets. Balaji bowled four out of the 10 wides by the Indians- maybe Chappell is thinking of something, but what's the point in opening the bowling with him when he has a dreadful new-ball record, but far better old-ball figures? The inverse about Irfan, though he got 4 for 42. Yadav's figures in the match were 2 for 11, where seven bowlers were used. Decent start, but a few facets need improvement. If anyone in SL has seen the match, they can provide a few inputs.

So far, nobody has said anything about the Lankan board's decision to play this series using the old ODI rules- that's a good step by the Board; the old format was a lot simpler and can't be far worse than these strange new rules.

A few have already posted their selections of choice. Here are a few plans I would like to see.
  • Any two out of the seven batsmen have to sit out.
  • Maybe Irfan's got some of his old form back, but he should take the new ball, since he's better with it.
  • For team's sake, don't open the bowling with Balaji!
  • They can play both spinners as attacking bowlers, a strategy not used very often. Worth a try.
  • They can try out a combination of Zaheer/Yadav/Balaji/Kumble/Harhajan, or Zaheer/Yadav/Nehra/Kumble/Harbhajan. If Irfan is in form, they can have him opening the bowling and Yadav coming in first-change.
  • In case the Lankan Board reverts to the strange new rules: If they're batting first and their super-sub is a batsman, they don't need to play him if they have several wickets in hand and few overs left- just send in numbers eight and nine a position up to hit the all hard and score quickly.
  • The team will badly miss a specialist opener.

*Sehwag, Laxman, Dravid, Yuvraj and Kaif are automatic selections, so Raina and Rao would sit out.
*Irfan with the new ball or not at all
*Balaji with the old ball or not at all
*Kumble and Harbhajan both included
*Forget about Yadav as an opening bowler as they didn't even try him in that role in any of the practice matches.
***With that, there are the 5 automatic batsmen plus Dhoni and Yadav and Zaheer and Kumble and Harbhajan. That leaves one spot, that of Zaheer's opening partner. Balaji and Yadav have been ruled out, leaving either Pathan or Nehra as candidates.
So, in effect, you're squad is as follows:
Sehwag, Laxman, Dravid, Yuvraj, Kaif, Dhoni, Yadav, Zaheer, Pathan/Nehra, Kumble, Harbhajan ... with 5 regular bowlers along with Yuvi and Sehwag

I think it is risky. I would prefer having Yadav as the fifth bowler and the sixth batsman... And I think Kumble (and Bhajji for that matter) are both well read by the Lankans... I think two spinners would be too risky.
