Preferred lineup:
  • Sehwag
  • Yuvraj (who else?)
  • Laxman
  • Kaif/Venugopal

  • Dravid
  • JP Yadav (RM, new ball)
  • Harbhajan Singh (OB)
  • Zaheer Khan (LFM, new ball)

The Indian team does not need Suresh Raina- he's one batsman too many.
Sriram or badani should have been selected over S. Raina.
And Rajesh Pawar or Yusuf Pathan in place of Kumble.

I am still not sure about Pathan and I am definitely not sure about JP Yadav with the new ball.
  • Nehra averages 35 with a new ball and 27 when its's a few overs old. His career-best figures of 6 for 23 came when he bowled first-change.
  • Balaji averages close to 40 with the new ball, but only 25 when he bowls first change or second.
  • The only other known new-ball bowler is Irfan Pathan, who's in dreadful form and shouldn't make the playing XI
  • That leaves you with JP Yadav, who's had success opening the bowlign for Railways and sometimes Central Zone. At present, he's definitely worth a try. If the Pakistanis can open with Rana Naved-Ul-Hasan, why can't the Indians give JP the new ball?

Players when there is a space available in the side...
So according to you any of the first 7 players in the side should not be replaced or we shouldnt try out new options even when the first 7 have been inconsistent.

If you want to promote new promising players, why not try these?
  • Irfan Pathan- He is the second-best six-hitter in the Indian side after Rahul Dravid and can be used as a hard-hitting number seven.
  • Vikram Singh- This Punjab bowler is a lot faster than the typical Indian medium-pacer and that adds power to the attack.
  • Joginder Sharma- Batting style similar to Mohammed Kaif (with more big hits) and capable of getting good shape on the new ball.
  • S Vidyut- Potential frontline spinner and hard-hitting batsman with success opening
These may not be hyped as much as Raina, but they are far more relevant.
Whom to try out may vary from the belief of different people on different players.

No, you're the only one showing futility here.

There's a batting line-up that they want to take them through to the WC - therefore there's not space for new people.
Right now is a time they may try some different players. Its not too late as yet with the world cup in mind.

No, what I'm saying is if there isn't space, then the player can't be selected - it's fairly simple.

I am not sure what is meant by 'second-best' six hitter in the team !! Whatever it means, I am also sure Irfan would like to be in the team for more authentic reasons.

Whatever it takes!!!

lol. I think JP Yadav could be given a try as a proper all rounder in the side. Maybe he can be given a shot at opening the bowling, just to see how good he is. But if he is the Ronnie Irani type, he can easily be clobbered.

I think Jadav (at 30) is being given recognition for some excellent work for Railways in the domestic season.

Unfortunately the standards are not much to go by. Its tragic thet the major players dont play domestic cricket.

If the top 7 places for the world cup are not sealed, there is obviously opportunity for some one to make one of the places his own. What I am saying is fairly simple too.

A lot of fans are not sure if Irfan should even be in the side for any reason, authentic or otherwise.

It is equally tragic to note that a team with Tendulkar, Dravid and Sehwag is at number 8 in ODI rnakings, so anybody is worth a try. Doubts were expressed about Dhoni, and he came second in averages after Dravid in the recent ODI series, proving he's more than just another Tier II player.

Nobody can get 56 wickets in 12 matches being a Ronnie Irani act. Besides, such bowlers can be used to good effect in the middle/final overs. Scott Styris isn't even a regular 130+ bowler, but what he does is enough for NZ.

Maybe....but everyone knows what the Indian team needs more, and it's not another Mohammed Kaif.

They do need a churning in their batting thats for sure. J.P.Yadav, Raina or who is the answer to that, we will know in time.

Regarding Kaif being referred to as the number 7 batsman not used much, it has been a combination which was fairly successful. Most teams bat deep in one dayers, and specialist batsmen at 7 are not uncommon.
