Eighteen years ago, it was the same month of March, the same Chinnaswami stadium and the same opponents, Pakistan.
The difference was that Pakistan had a much better bowling side with Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Salim Jaffer, Iqbal Qasim and Tausif Ahmed,
The second difference was that the wicket was WICKED ! It was a vicious turner. So much that Imran did not take the new ball himslef but asked Iqbal Qasim (left arm spinner) to open with Akram and bowled Wasim for only 11 overs and bowled none himself or by Jaffer.
In 97 overs, India, chasing 221 for victory, were all out 16 runs short. Even this was a great performance since ten of their batsmen contributed 81 runs between them. One man alone stood between Pakistan and victory and almost defeated them single handedly scoring 96 before he was 8th out at 180.
He too was from Bombay like Sachin. He too was called the little master. He too had scored 10000 runs and 34 test centuries. But on that day the difference between what he did and what Tendulkar tried was that he played 254 deliveries for his 96 while Sachin played 98 for 16.
Yes he was trying for a win and Sachin may have not been doing that but if he had attempted to play like Sachin did today, I doubt if he would have survived 264 deliveries on that spiteful wicket.
I watched that game too and I am sorry to say, Sachin did not measure up today.
