Watching Burgey and vicleggie go at each other is like the online forum equivalent of watching 2 underweight 12 year old girls in a boxing ring standing still but they keep swinging and missing at each other

Siddle was the James Pattinson-prototype when he first arrived wasn't he? All snarl and menace. Kohli better get his head screwed straight before the vegan-keto nonsense does its work.

Lyon got as helpful spin pitches as they get in the last two and still manages to average a whopping 34 for the year. This BS about Lyon actually being some sort of a GOAT spinner needs to die. He just doesn't have it. He did not outbowl anyone on the last tour. He was about equal to an injured Ashwin (had a hernia surgery and missed the IPL/ he was carrying that injury since the last England Test in Chennai) and was easily outbowled by Jadeja.

Lyon's SR for the year is 73. He does get too many wickets against India for my liking but isn't "great" looking at his results.

He had a pretty mediocre tour of SA by his standards but his actual bowling is high quality. The idea that the last two pitches were dustbowls is farcical.

Yeah, I would plump for Lyon over virtually every other finger spinner. The current version does far too many things right to be unsuccessful for long.

He was always that kind of bowler. Good without being great. When you pick Lyon in the team, you always know what you get. On pitches favoring pace bowlers, he will do well ( better than Ashwin and Jadeja). On slow and low pitches, he is pretty mediocre ( record in UAE and the current test match).

Couple of telling statistics.

He averaged less than 25 in only one calendar year, 2017.

Averaged less than 30 in only 3 out of 8 years in his career so far ( 2011,2015 and 2017).

Never had a peak as a bowler but never had a extremely poor year either.

Swann never averaged under 25 in a calender year in test cricket.

If you are the sole spinner in a 4 man bowling attack, you are always going to have to shoulder a heavy workload, especially on flat pitches.

Lyon allows Australia to play an extra batsmen.

If you were going to talk about an Oz bowler who'd had an ordinary calendar year it's Hazlewood.

Currently averaging over 35 (hadn't gone over 30 previously) without taking more than 3 wickets in an innings. Was disappointing on SA pitches that should've suited him and only been just OK so far this series. Blessing in disguise for him that he missed the UAE Tests otherwise his average would probably be higher.

Nice morning at the mcg.
Indians players out on the ground.
First practice ball bowled.

Anyone know what the weather is like in Geelong?

Lyon in the Ashes: 65 wickets at 29.64, ER 2.78
Swann in the Ashes: 62 wickets at 39.98, ER 3.17

Not strictly relevant to AUS v IND, but it is certainly very noteworthy
