We were totally clear that this was the combination we wanted: Kohli
"There are lots of variables that can happen during the course of a cricket match but before that, you need to have clarity as to what you want to do."
It's become a bane for India this year. Wrong selections and their failure, at times, to read the conditions properly has led to the team's downfall in crunch situations. In Cape Town and Centurion, early this year, they opted to play Rohit Sharma ahead of Ajinkya Rahane. In Edgbaston, it was KL Rahul over Cheteshwar Pujara. And now at Perth, Umesh Yadav played over both Ravindra Jadeja and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
And it came back to hurt India in the second Test, which they lost by 146 runs. Umesh Yadav bowled a combined 37 overs at the hosts in the Test, giving away 139 runs at close to four runs an over, and picked two wickets in the bargain. Not only was he India's most expensive bowler (barring Murali Vijay who bowled one over for 10 runs), he also failed to trouble the batsmen consistently with either his pace or consistency.
India captain Virat Kohli said that they went with Umesh for the game as he had recently picked up a ten-wicket haul (against Windies in Hyderabad) and looked in good rhythm.
"Bhuvi [Bhuvneshwar] hasn't played a lot of four-day cricket recently and Umesh took ten wickets in his last Test and was in good bowling rhythm," Kohli said on Tuesday (December 18). "So that was the reason behind picking Umesh over Bhuvi," he said, before adding that they might still have gone with Ashwin if he was fit to play.
"Yes, we could have considered (Ashwin if he was fit). If you see, the rough didn't have much assistance. It was just the pace on the ball that Lyon bowled that he got the wickets that he got. We as a team didn't want to think that we definitely wanted to consider a spinning option on this pitch, especially having had a look at the pitch on day one and how we thought it would play on the first three days, it exactly played out that way. We thought a fast bowler is going to be more productive and more helpful for us as a team."
The move to bring Umesh Yadav in also meant India had to endure a long tail. In a match where the scores hovered around the late-200s to the early-300s, the contribution of the lower order was paramount. India's bottom four aggregated 11 runs over the two innings. Kohli said it had been a very tricky decision to take.
"When you pick another fast bowler, obviously Ashwin or Jadeja have more ability with the bat, we all know that. It's a very tricky decision to make, what kind of a bowling option you want to go with or you want to think that that guy can contribute with the bat as well. So eventually you come to one decision and we back that decision and went ahead with it. Whether it comes off or not, that's a different thing but we were totally convinced in the team that that was our best combination to go with and the batsmen have to take responsibility. There are lots of variables that can happen during the course of a cricket match but before that, you need to have clarity as to what you want to do and as a side, we were totally clear that this was the combination we wanted to go with."
If the tail was a problem, India's opening woes is another mighty headache. KL Rahul and Murali Vijay failed again, leaving the skipper with a problem that a fix is soon around the corner. India have flown in Mayank Agarwal and Hardik Pandya with that hope. Kohli said that it was important for them to keep backing the underperforming openers and telling them that they belong.
"You just have to keep backing them and keep telling them that they belong and they are good enough to perform. It is not even giving someone individual goals. It's just telling them that this is what we require as a team from the opener and this is the role that needs to be fulfilled. I think as a batting group, we have spoken a lot about those things.
"I am sure that these guys have figured out what has gone wrong in this game, specially, and they are very keen to correct it themselves. There's not much that you can say, to be honest. You just have to be confident as a side and believe that the role that has been given, that will be fulfilled and individuals to a certain extent have to take responsibility of that. The guys are obviously looking forward to taking that responsibility."
