Great win for Australia. Paine is winning some hearts here which is nice to see.

To me the key was the 100 run opening partnership in the first innings. For all the talk about how hard fourth innings runs are to score, first innings runs and especially opening partnerships are quite simply more valuable. They keep your opponents playing catch up all the time. We never recovered to even make it a 50-50 once that partnership got going.

Overall, despite the shocking quality of Day 1, this was pretty high quality imo. Kohli's ton was sick, Kohli v Cummins was great, Bumrah was unplayable and Lyon superb.

Fourth innings runs being so hard are a big part of why first innings runs are so valuable tbf

It really isn't though. Yesterday when the ball was flying around and catching edges the Indian blokes were whooping it up deluxe. If they thought they weren't going to cop it back in spades when their turn came, then it probably reflects the fact they've never come here with a pace attack which could dish it out before.
not sure what you expect the 4 tailenders to do. not their job to be fending starc/cummins bouncers with 150 more to get and no batsmen to give them company. would be nice if they stood solidly behind the line and defended 150kph with soft hands but also incredibly dangerous and stupid for guys averaging 7.

nothing wrong with australia doing it mind.

Yeah stephen even I found that a bit cringey
I was saying it from the players' point of view, in the context of Virat's chest thumping yesterday.

It's like sumos starting each other down. It's as much about how you go about your business than it is about what you do in today's situation. Everyone knew Australia was going to win. But it's about the way they came out today and bullied India with the ball.

It was the equivalent of Kohli screaming yesterday at Paine's dismissal. It's sending a statement.

Yeah it's all connected. But I was just making the point that tough, high quality runs can be less valuable than flogging crap bowling.

Oh for sure, but 24 hours ago they gave it out, they have to expect to cop it. Otherwise don't dish it up to numbers 8-11 from the other outfit.

I mean, the real idiot was Rahul, who chirped up a storm when Paine got out then played one on in the first over. That's village.

Yeah honestly Kohli was carrying on like a pork chop (as my grandmother would say) all test. When you dish it out like that, expect to cop a few bouncers.

I'm sure they all fully expected to cop it. Bit of a non-issue anyways.

Virat just seems a different person off the field these days
"As a team I think we played well in patches which we can hold onto. Australia played much better than us with the bat. 330 on that pitch we felt was a bit too much. They deserved to win. We had the belief we could do it, but they were more relentless and put us in trouble. [Our bowlers] are outstanding as a pack, to see them dominate was really good to see and something we want to build on. They are relentless even if they aren't getting wickets which is a great quality. When we looked at the pitch we didn't think about [Jadeja] but I thought Nathan bowled really well. We never thought we wanted to consider a spinner, thought four fast bowlers would be enough. When you don't win you don't really rank your performances so it's irrelevant because we didn't get the result we wanted. I'm just focused on the next Test. [The catch to dismiss him] It was a decision made on the field and it stays there. Nothing more to it."
Surprisingly well measured. Strange how he turns into an insufferable prick the moment adrenaline is coursing through his veins.

Lol Langer doing an interview atm and he literally just said said in answer to a question about Handscomb "About the only thing I've asked him is whether he's watching the ball." Six figures a year for that sort of insight.

McGrath was very similar.

He's India's Ponting in many ways. The main difference between the two is that Ponting was a bit more accountable off the field.

Really enjoying seven's coverage by the way. It must be said that Mitchell, McGrath, Fleming, Ponting & Slater are all doing a fantastic job at calling the game and I really enjoy hearing their insights. Much better than nine in recent years. The only thing that brings it down a notch is James Brayshaw, who couldn't call a cricket match in a mature fashion if his life depended on it. Guess he brings in the yobbo crowd, if anything.

What's this footage of Jadeja and Sharma having a spat on the field? Hadn't seen that yesterday.
