Benteke to Liverpool is a strange one. He's a good player, but he's essentially just a trade-up for Rickie Lambert. He couldn't be further away from fitting Liverpool's style of play.

Baffling decision.
Heard someone argue yesterday that they needed to change their style of play because their way hasn't worked without Suarez.

Fair point probably but can't see Rodgers lumping to the style of play that would accommodate Benteke

Only another 17 million of the Sterling money for good ol' Brendan to waste, before they get shot of him, and are then looking down the barrell of a gun.

Liverpool's year though Obvs.

Oh yeah, what to do with 7 million, maybe good to keep it back for a nice settlement to get out of any pesky long contracts with deadweight.
They should give it to Tranmere as compensation for all the ****ing tunnel rats

He scored a lot on the counter for Villa. I think he's good enough at scoring goals to be a moderate success at most clubs and can't think of too many available players of a similar quality that would fit Rodgers' style. I think it's a fair enough signing.

Eds pointed out on twitter that 7 of his 13 PL goals last year came from crosses (plus 5 normal open play goals and 1 penalty), and that Liverpool made the 2nd least amount of crosses per game in the PL last season.

Possibly. I think United have a stronger negotiating position than RM have calculated. De Gea is only on 60k a week so it's in both his and the club's interest if he signs a longer contract with a reasonable release clause before going for a fee next summer.

Pedro looking to United looking likely then. Seriously good buy I reckon, think they guy is hugely underrated.

I think we need a focal point in attack. Even Sturridge, as lethal as he is, doesn't really dominate an opposition's defence and if they want to take care of his speed they just sit deeper. This way, we have a guy able to fend off the big CBs and act as a target man for the many skilful and pacey midfielders we have (Ibe, Firmino, Coutinho, Lallana, Markovic, etc). He's also fast and technical enough to not just rely on crosses.

I think a bit less than 3rd of his goals came from headers at Villa. I'm not really in doubt of his quality, 1-in-2 forward across 3 seasons for a dreadful Villa side is impressive for me and think at worst he'll be a double-digit back-up but we need even that. I think he could even be better with better players around him. The one thing that I still worry about is if he has really recovered from his achilles injury. But if the club is willing to pay out the buy-out clause you'd think/hope they've done their homework.

Yeah have to say some of the shots aimed at these Benteke move are a bit off. Ok maybe the price is a bit high, but its the same as we paid for Berbatov. To get a 1 in 2 striker (for a ridiculously uncreative team no less) means paying money, and I reckon he'll be a hit there.

And if any **** throws Andy Carroll back in my face......

Giroud cost £8.4m. He was 25 coming off a season of 21 goals in 3205 minutes, and has basically maintained that rate while at Arsenal. Benteke is 24 and is coming off a season of 13 goals in 2380 minutes. He might be slightly better, and the transfer might work out, but to me it smacks of overpaying for a PL proven player who has excelled as the focal point (the side basically playing the way they'll best utilise him) at a mid table club, which is what Liverpool have specialised in over the last 6/7 years and have hardly had great success doing.

Of course there's a premium on the fact that he's been scoring Premiership goals for a long time, that's normal. I don't think they'll be thrilled with the transfer fee but have decided they can't get a better striker for cheaper. Which makes me interested to see who United end up getting up front. Either they pluck someone unexpected or just sign ****ing Cavani.
