Only by people that are wrong. Ozil doesn't smash many in, you don't want to gift him the option of a subtle finish. Maybe if it was Riise or someone.

That's such an obvious penalty for the Flamini challenge. I think sometimes in those spots the refs sort of refuse to believe anyone would make such a stupid challenge.

I agree it would be a 'wrong' criticism, but it'd be one made by more or less every prominent pundit, I suspect.

So because occasionally someone will register an assist for a goal they contributed little to, that makes the entire stat over prolonged periods useless. OK.

Haven't we had this discussion 100s of times before. Many of us just think it's arbitrary, sometimes they're great, but other times the incisive thing was done before the final ball, or the goal was individual brilliance. Go on about "key passes" or summat if you must, but assists are just an annoying stat.

My intention was not to start that particular debate up again tbh. I was just musing over whether were it was an English player who'd managed to get a record breaking number of assists (the disputed importance of which notwithstanding), the media and the hoi polloi would be crowing about it.

Marc Albrighton is tearing it up in assists IIRC. No one cares. I don't think it has anything to do with nationality.

Behind Barkley, but otherwise yeah. In any event, Ozil has nearly double any other player at the moment. I just refuse to believe that the hype machine wouldn't be ramped up to 100 if it was an English player who could be described as such. Rightly or wrongly.

I think the hype would just be a result of an English player as good as Ozil existing tbh.
