It's not at the expense of the team though. They add a whole new element to the team's play instead of playing rigidly. Downing was a complete non-entity and when he got the ball he did nothing with it anyway.

Downing was worthy of a look in Cole's absence, but at the moment he lacks the nous or the speed to get beyond the final defender. No other outstanding candidate, so he remains the most likely to fill in if wee Joe gets broken again.

Oh yes, Richardson showed himself to be completely useless (and incapable of passing the ball) when he replaced him on Saturday.

Mind you, if there's 3 subs, then by rights the impact winger will be on the right flank.

His goal was from a considerably big deflection and he was pretty much overshadowed all night by Ribery and Govou. But I believe Scaly does not have Sky, so just for him he had a barnstormer of a game and ran rings around the Italian defence all night.

Saves marc doing it, do love the suggestion from someone who thinks one deflected goal would wipe out him being a flat track bully for the length of his career. It's like going ooh Heskey scored and then suggesting he's now a world beater.

Takes more than a one-off fluke. He would need to consistently perform, just as he consistently hasn't performed in the past against the decent teams particularly in important games.
