As has been said repeatedly that's irrelevant because we're on about their abilities to play on the left side of midfield for which Downing >>> Joe Cole.
Despite the fact Downing looked out of his league against mighty Macedonia?

Average ignorant football fans like yourself automatically think a winger having a quiet game is being 'useless'
Amazing how everyone who disagrees with you is "ignorant" isn't it?

I assume that also goes for people like Alan Green as well...

Scaly piscine said:
that's the nature of being a proper winger most of the time, you hardly get the ball and a chance to shine unless the team specifically decide to attack down your one flank.
So how come he didn't shine on Saturday then, another poor performance from him then, and not due to the lack of ball.

If he's better then how come Joe Cole has been playing out there for so long and he's been our best player over the past 12 months then?

International Captain
Aye. From what I've seen, Joe Cole is far more impressive than Downing on the left side during England games. And I'm a New Zealander. It's that obvious!

Because he keeps cutting infield as has already been mentioned.

Dear god, and Arjen Robben, who does exactly the same thing is distictly poor on the left too?

Short of cutting infield at each opportunity, taking on 4-5 defenders getting tackled, occasionally having a little flick that comes off and not tracking back properly you'll always say he's had a poor performance because you've made your mind up already.

I know how you feel.

ESPN are too tight **** to show the France v Italy game. Then again they didn't bother about the Italian Super Cup, or the big matchews there, must be living in some 1980's sterotype of Serie A 8-)
I watched and loved the game on Zee Sports. They are showing the Italian league as well this year..

No, I thought (and indeed said) he had a reasonable game against Greece, but that's the only time he's looked anything like up to the task, and was probably helped by the Greek right back being absolutely woeful.

What is Owen Hargreaves playing then?
He was playing at the end of Sven's time, and Sven also kept selecting him in squads in spite of a great deal of criticism from public and media.

What hasn't changed is the team is still playing badly and now resorting back to hoofing it upfield to protect a 1-0.

What has changed is that because McLaren isn't Swedish, he's not getting abuse for it.

Hardgreaves point is debatable on which manager thinks how much of him. However, generally, McClaren has made some changes in England definitely.

If you referred to nothing has changed regarding how the team plays, I think it is a bit early to say and you have to give McClaren time. As it isn't fair to say McClaren has changed a lot for England right now, it is unfair to say nothing has changed as well.

Update: Okay you can mean regarding the performance so far in which case it isn't illogical.

What was clear against Macedonia last night was that England still sat right back after about an hour protecting the lead and this was against Macedonia.

Sven kept selecting him for squads regardless of the stick he got for it - how is that debateable what he thinks of him?

Doesn't the bit before the italics contradict the bit after?

Downing was worthy of a look in Cole's absence, but at the moment he lacks the nous or the speed to get beyond the final defender. No other outstanding candidate, so he remains the most likely to fill in if wee Joe gets broken again.

Why is it so bad if Cole cuts infield?, i would say thats a good thing.
Scaly has forgotten that Arjen Robben is one of the world's best players, and that him and Joe Cole are very similar in how they play.
