How many English footballers go abroad to play their trade? Can't have successes if no one goes. English football seems to have a very insular view of the football world and tend to, I believe, just assume every other league in the world is inferior to the Premiership. It's almost like australian rugby league and the NRL.Goughy said:The risk/reward ratio makes any potential overseas move look like folly. I mean with Charles and Keegan being the examples given is hardly a testamant to recent success. Apart from Linekar and Beckham there are not many.
Peter Crouch. Played for mighty Hässleholm a few seasons back.steds said:How many English footballers go abroad to play their trade?
Mark Hughes was a disappointment at Barcelona, but did better when loaned to Bayern.Matteh said:Didn't Mark Hughes do alright whilst playing abroad and came back because he was homesick?
He could not settle in London (so **** knows why he could be going to Spurs). So I doubt he be able to settle in a country which speaks another language and drives the other way.Craig said:Well I think he is good enough to play in other league, on the continent and it is a chance to try something different. You only play once.
Michael Owen did okay, in fact his scoring rate was good, he got messed about is all, but as a player he performedCraig said:I'm not sure about Beckham to be honest. Michael Owen is one who didn't work out.
Liam Brady is one who does stand out in my mind, but then that was before the PL days.
Good as Aldo was (top scorer in Spain in one year, IIRC) I think John Charles was voted Juve's greatest ever import, wasn't he?GeraintIsMyHero said:Michael Owen did okay, in fact his scoring rate was good, he got messed about is all, but as a player he performed
However, none of the aforementioned players come slightly close to this nation's finest export, John Aldridge, who was excellent at Real Socidead.
It does increase the risk I think, yes - but not likely by a great deal.Craig said:Man Utd shave £28m off annual debt burden
Now Marc is the finicial expert among us here (well more then me anyway), although it gives them money to buy players, but doesn't make it more of a high risk thing? These Glazer's seem to know a thing or two...
Best goals per time on the pitch ratio in La Liga - hardly a bad effort.Craig said:Michael Owen is one who didn't work out.
Probably. Aldo is my idol, what a legend.BoyBrumby said:Good as Aldo was (top scorer in Spain in one year, IIRC) I think John Charles was voted Juve's greatest ever import, wasn't he?
Great goalscorer, no doubt. Scored goals wherever he was except for Eire. IIRC he took something ridiculous like 25 games to get off the mark for them?GeraintIsMyHero said:Probably. Aldo is my idol, what a legend.
I mean the fact he was being sold the following season, and that Real Madrid were going about signing players like Robinho and Julio Bapistia (and then eventually for some reason Antonio Cassano), and he was going to face a lot of time is the reason why I use that it didn't work out.marc71178 said:Best goals per time on the pitch ratio in La Liga - hardly a bad effort.
Yes he was.BoyBrumby said:Good as Aldo was (top scorer in Spain in one year, IIRC) I think John Charles was voted Juve's greatest ever import, wasn't he?
