Well Alan Smith may not be a good striker, he may not be an average striker, but if someone told me he had to be in my side, I wouldn't be putting him centre midfield

Still so capable that in the season after that he was rubbish, and the injury excuse isn't valid as he had long spells without goals.

July 12th: "The club can confirm there is no possibility of Cristiano being sold. Cristiano recently signed a new contract until 2010 and the club fully expects him to honour that contract. The club will not listen to any offers for Cristiano"
Shame. I believe that football clubs would be better off if they didn't employ girls to play for them.

...or they should atleast get real girls, with breasts.

Didn't he score 21 goals last season?

Yup. Didn't play many of the games near the end, either, since Saha put him to the bench. Could've scored more!

Didn't know Vieira had a problem with Neville. I'm sure they could get past it though.
why would vieira join man utd? and quite frankly i doubt man utd would really be interested, seeing as it would just turn into another roy keane situation a few years down the line, i expect they are more likely to look at gattuso.

Remind us of who he scored them against?

Would that be 4 against Sparta Prague, 1 against Fenerbache and 3 against Lyon?

Spot the big clubs...

2 years ago was when he should've been sold. I believe that the likes of Mr Halsey were very much for dumping him there and then.

Lyon being the French champions have a claim to being called a big club.
The other two....naah.

Lyon are the best of that lot, but the other 2 are far from it.

I believe the Fenerbache was a 6-0 rout, and the 4 against Prague all came in one game.

The difference is that now you have a debt of about £300 million to service thanks to Glazer & sons. Traditionally you are (& will continue to be so, I'm sure) a buying club, but the whole Van Nosedive thing is obviously more about a personality clash than an actual footballing decsion. For mine I'd still back Ruud to bag more than Torres in the coming season.

WRT Vieira, Keane & (possibly) RVN may no longer be suckling at Satan's teat, but I doubt Giggs or (especially) Neville are Pat's bestest buds. Anyway, they're all pros, I'm sure they'd sort it out. It's just disappointing to see a good man turning to the dark side (:p).
Offer Big Pat a big enough pay packet, and problems, what problems?

Which sides are bigger? Aston Villa and Charlton or Lyon and Fenerbache? Exactly. No matter what you say about the sides, a goal in the CL tends to be better than a goal in the Premiership.

Regardless, he was plagued by multiple problems & injuries that season and only managed 17 games, hardly the amount a fully fit and ready player would play - it was also said that he was brought back after injury too early by Man Utd, and was useless for it. The next season he got 21 goals. This sort of thing happens in football - much like Heinze, Brown, Saha etc. you can't be fit for all season, every season.

EDIT: Back to the Torres discussion...

The same man who was quoted saying Torres is not for sale - "not for all the money in the world" - is now quoted as saying "I've spoken to Fernando and he hasn't been able to guarantee his presence in the team in the forthcoming season"

EDIT: Transfers...
15 July 2006
Dean Leacock from Fulham to Swansea City, £375k

For once I agree with Scaly - being able to play up front doesn't mean he's good enough to do it for a top Premiership side.

I don't think he's an amazing midfielder, but he's better there than up front for sure as far as I'm concerned.

Didn't know Vieira had a problem with Neville. I'm sure they could get past it though.

They didn't sell Ruud two years ago because he was still clearly capable of scoring over 20 goals a season, as he proved last season. He might still be capable but as I said, I doubt he'd do it this season if he hasn't got the heart for it, and it was pretty clear that he didn't at the end of last season.

Still, shame to see him go.
Also, if I'm not mistaken the strike force 2 years ago wasn't so good as compared to now. As was clearly evident with the goals tally without RVN.

I said the injuries weren't relevant (and he played a lot more than 17 games) as he still had 2 good long runs in the side, I believe there was one of 9 or 10 without scoring.

Interesting to see the quality of the opposition argument bandied around here, the one Scaly gets constantly slated for....
