I may be wrong, but I think United actually won their first ten games of the 85/86 season.
He was appointed in the 86/87 season. (November 1986)

When it looked like Fat Ron was going to get us relegated.

So let me get this straight, when Ferguson gets in players he's rebuilt the side, when Wenger does, it's all because of the scouts?
He only got in makeshift players who in reality he knew were going nowehere... what he did do was set up the youth system which was instrumental in our success.

He did splash the cash on the odd player though, bought most of the non-youth players that would become part of our 90s side before 1990.

i fail to see how purposefully signing makeshit players he knew full well were poor quality is to his credit, veron was a mighty expensive makeshift, but of course ferguson obviously knew this. The youth system he had so much to do with? the one that used a vast scouting network?

Cole was definitely after 90. Around 95/96

Schmeichel and Cole were both after 1990.

Fair enough, I was thinking early 90s (1993 really) and Schmeichel and Cantona are the only ones I can think of for that.

Makeshift players he knew were never going to win the League, but kept the club in a mid-table position.

Veron has to do with the 1980s what exactly?

Ferguson set up and oversaw the youth system and you know it. Without Ferguson, there was no youth system (or a good one at any rate).

Heh what did I say about the chief poseur... flops against Manure and scores against the mighty Portsmouth.

Oh and Middlesbrough v Charlton is surprisingly entertaining.

Jonathan Pearce "game over" at 3-1 with 17 minutes plus stoppage time left.

Muppet.

See if he repeats the comment at 4-2 now.

My Dad and I turned this on at eight, when I said it would be a terrible game.

Only thing terrible so far has been the defending.

Referee ballsed that one up, could understand the one for Charlton in the first half, but he was in a perfect position to see that was a penalty for Boro.

Well the CDMs kept up their shocking away record so now they'll need more than just victory against Spurs to get that last CL spot, barring 2 more feeble CL opponents.

For the record....
Cole = Jan 95
Scheichel = Aug 91
Keane = Jul 93
Sharpe = Jun 88
Irwin = Jun 90
McClair - Jul 87
Cantona = Feb 92
Pallister = Aug 89

Doesn't look that good a team by today's standards...

Well, no, there are only 8 of them.

Apart from the fact that Roy Keane, for all his thuggishness, and Eric Cantona, for all his, er, what he's got, are probably the best two United midfield players since Bobby charlton - and Schmeichel is without a doubt the best goalkeeper that United have ever had by a street.

Well...

Cantona was recently voted the best foreigner ever to play in the Premiership (and I agree). A back 4 of Bruce, Pallister, Parker and Irwin is top quality by any standards, with Schmeichel behind them.

Cantona and Hughes up front is good by any standards.

Giggs - young player of the year (possibly peaked back then), Ince (an **** but a good player), Kanchelskis is a great midfield.

To suggest the team isn't good is ludicrous.

Personally i'd rather have the 90s Arsenal defence over the Man Utd one. To claim otherwise is nonsense.

Personally i think Zola is the best foreign player to play in the Premiership - a better role model too.

That team playing today at the same level as then wouldn't be capable as winning as many titles as it did.

United's defence pre-96 regularly had a better defensive record than Arsenal.

Of course that team didn't have Chelsea to contend with... but these are special circumstances. I doubt many championship-winning sides over the years could compete with a team spending £100 million a year.
