bar the man utd side that won the champions league, their champions league record in the last few seasons has been dodgy, certainly nothing substantially better than arsenals.
I'd say 1 knockout tie win in 7 years is considerably worse...

That's because he rebuilt the team.
So let me get this straight, when Ferguson gets in players he's rebuilt the side, when Wenger does, it's all because of the scouts?

The way I see it, SAF is (as far as I know) considered one of the greatest managers in English football history, if not the best. Now, I don't like Arsenal, but to say that coming in second to one of the greatest managers in history means you're not that good, then you may as well say that nobody in the history of any sport is great unless they're the best at the time. Even if they're facing up to Don Bradman, Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth, Michael Schumacher, Tiger Woods, Pelé, Muhammad Ali, Ayrton Senna, Sugar Ray Robinson, Steve Redgrave, Lance Armstrong... they still have to be #1 if they're to be considered to be good at what they do? That's taking it too far. I think Arsen is a good manager.

EDIT: It's like saying that Murali is no good because Warne is better, or vice versa. They're both greats. Lara and Tendulkar likewise.

hmm yes....but then man utds record at advancing to the latter stages is hardly fantastic, granted its better than arsenals though.

So when has Ferguson had 9 consecutive top 2 places then?
That pales in comparison to actually winning the trophy more than just being in the top 2. 9 consecutive top 2 finishes is not as maginificent as winning it 7 times out of 9.

You'd have to consider the time period (70s,80s,etc) before making such a statement and also how long it took to make Man Utd a force.

Wenger is a good manager but Fergie's better. Even now he's still better. Arsenal haven't beaten Man Utd in at least three seasons if I'm not mistaken. The period Ferguson has been "in decline".

i dont think anyone mentioned magnificence, i think that was a comment on consistency.
Consistency is also present for Ferguson. Winning it so many times is consistency right?

not as consistant as arsenals amount of top 2 finishes im afraid.
Well any football fan or expert worth their salt would much rather that kind of consistency I'd think.

of course a result is a direct reflection of a managers ability, i dont see how that statistic shows anything other than the fact that arsenal have indeed been defeated or not been able to beat man utd, it shows nowt else, nothing at all.

He'd surely have been able to beat a Man Utd team in decline if he was a better manager. If Middlesbrough can do it then surely Arsenal can.
