Especially when you're pushing someone like Pietersen down the order. Kabir Ali miraculously on 36* off 47 balls against Yorkshi*e.

Just been watching the last few overs of Gloucestershire v Surrey in the C & G. Very mature innings from Rikki Clarke, sometimes you can't help but think he's just being unorthodox for the sake of it, but saw Surrey home.

Good job Jon Lewis isn't in the England squad for his fielding too. In the last over he let a ball go right under him fielding at short fine leg, turning what should've been no more than a single into an all-run 4. Effectively killed the game; a potentially tricky 7 runs off 6 balls became a cushy 3 off 5. Not sure he's test class as a bowler either, with his relative lack of pace (keeper standing up throughout) I think he'll be pretty toothless when conditions are against him. He's not a Pollock/McGrath model of accuracy. Although v few are, TBF.

I can't remember the excat dates off hand but It said he would either make his debut in the C&G this week or in the Totesport game on Sunday (or whenever the next OD match is)

There is little doubt he has signed for them, but there was obviously a reason he wantted to keep things quiet for a day or so maybe he was having talks with other counties and hadn't informed them that he had decided to join Mids'... Middlesex still have conformation on their website that he has signed him you would think if things had fallen through they would have changed it.

EDIT: Middlesex Squad for C&G Second Round
Middlesex have announced their squad for the Cheltenham and Gloucester second round match against Northamptonshire tomorrow at Lord's Cricket Ground.

The match will begin at 10.45am with the gates opening at 9.45am. Tickets will be available on the gate priced £10 for adults and £5 concessions. Middlesex members will be able to get into the game for free.

New signing Irfan Pathan will not take part in tomorrows match, as he is not scheduled to arrive in the UK until this weekend.

Full Squad for tomorrow:
Weekes, Smith, Shah, Strauss, Joyce, Styris, Dalrymple, Hutton, Scott, Betts, Richardson, Peploe

Of course they want KP to play as they stand a much greater chance of getting him out, if he insists at scoring at 120 all the time and playing his shots he will offer chances, McGrath can bowl all day long outside off stump and KP wont be able to resist for long... Bell is more controlled and is able to leave deliveries :D
Ah okay. The local papers here are still not confirming the signing from Pathan's side.

And BTW, the latter conspiracy theory thing wasn't a post by me, but by Pratyush it seems. You mis-quoted it :p.

Two up & down from 2006

From cricinfo:

I always thought relegating & promoting one-third of the division was a bit Mickey Mouse. Two up/two down seems about right. I don't think teams in Div 2 have been cut off in the way that they feared; in fact it would take a pretty anal cricketing anorak to be able to name which county is in which division of the National League & CC.

Of whom Peploe was 12th man. Pretty mediocre batting performance, for which I mostly blame Ed Smith, who was way too slow. The one bright spot was Strauss's innings, as he looked in fine form. He was out to a one-day gamble shot, the dab towards third man played on the move in search of a quick single, which encountered second slip and stuck.

Incidentally, I think Usman Afzaal is getting in shape for a future career as an Inzamam Aloo lookalike, as he has clearly been getting seriously involved with the samosas.

Cheers,

Mike

Good solid win for Lancs, Flintoff bowling well and Hodge a nice innings with the bat. Result never really in doubt. Now to avenge last years QF defeat

thats two in a row i have missed at old trafford  anyway has you rightfully said dave time to definately avenge our defeat to surrey. Nice that the its right here, we cant miss that one.

But i must admit i was shocked that surrey defeated gloucestershire, i reckon we have a better chance to reach the semi's now, but i hope we have to play the winner of the York/Nott QF because i think Lanchashire might be a bit hard pressed to beat Warwicshire

we've got Sussex/Notts in hte QF, at home so i fancy our chances, i hadn't seen the draw when i said that so i thought we might get yorkshi*te.

Anyway good to see Freddie asked to play at Somerset, and England let him!

Kabir Ali did well at 4. Was sent out to pinch hit, but then Hick got out so had to bat normally.
And the upshot of all that was that better batsmen (such as Smith) didn't have long at the crease, and they ended up losing!

Not in OD they wouldn't, especially not if Flintoff is available.

Warwickshire have made some very strange calls in the One Day line-up of late.

Carter always opening the batting tends to mean we have specialist batsmen batting 8, and then the specialist batsman is given lots of overs when he's not necessarily the answer.

It worked yesterday (as did the bizarre notion of Ian Bell bowling 1st change, and Carter being used as 6th bowler!) but I would worry about it against a stronger line-up.

Sussex on course to make it 3-0 to the 2nd division National League sides over the 1st division National League sides in the C&G Trophy this year.

Showing that the 2 division structure is as yet meaningless. There's no real difference in strength between the divisions, especially if you look at the England players and the ferriners who ply their trade in div. 2.

Possibly the most idiotically paced run chase ever, though. They now need 22 runs with 5 wickets in hand and 12 balls remaining...Ealham 10-4-24-2 (!!!)

Edit: My bad. 50 overs, not 45.
