Eng act to ward off rebel league threat

08 March 2008 (02:17)

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has said players who take part in the next edition of a rebel Twenty20 league will not be allowed to play in English cricket.
The breakaway Indian Cricket League (ICL) held its inaugural tournament late last year and has said it will stage its second event from March 9 to April 7.

It is bankrolled by the controllers of India's largest listed media firm but has not been sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The Indian cricket board recently introduced their own multi-million dollar Twenty20 tournament, the Indian Premier League, which has been sanctioned.

ICL organisers have focused on sub-continent and Australian players, but England players Chris Read, Vikram Solanki, Darren Maddy and Paul Nixon have signed lucrative contracts to play in the first ICL season.

Several boards have banned ICL players from representing their country and, having taken legal advice, the ECB issued a statement on Friday "to deal with the threat".

The ECB said its regulations would be amended with immediate effect so that a cricketer who plays in an unauthorised event in the 12 months leading up to April 1 would not qualify for registration.

"In addition, once registered with the ECB, a cricketer will be disqualified if he plays in an unauthorised event," the ECB said.

The ECB will take no action against cricketers who had registered with the ECB and who had already contracted with an unauthorised event, but said the amended regulations would come into effect for future contracts.

Update on Kemp...

"Kemp recently flew to India to play in the ICL's current tournament, the Edelweiss 20 Challenge, only to discover that if he did so he stood to be banned from playing county cricket for one year by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). If he leaves India, however, the ICL has threatened to take him to court for breaking his contract with them.
"It's becoming really messy," said Ford on Monday. The former Proteas and Dolphins coach leaves South Africa on Wednesday to coach Kent for the forthcoming English county cricket season.

"As it stands, you've got to feel sorry for Kempie. He's been given advice, and now suddenly the goalposts have shifted."

Kemp was signed as a Kolpak player, but because he has played first-class cricket in another country (South Africa) within the past 12 months, he stands to be banned from playing for Kent for a year.

Other Kolpak signings around the county circuit, such as Lance Klusener at Northamptonshire and Dale Benkenstein at Durham, are not expected to have a problem because they were with their respective counties before the ICL began

There are obviously cases where a player can still sign as a Kolpak despite having played first-class cricket in another country in the last 12 months. I believe each case is dealt with individually, what the conditions of who can and who can't, I'm unsure. But think the ECB would struggle to stop a player, unless of course he appears in the ICL, which is when it becomes a bit messy.

Yasir Arafat signs as Kent's overseas player for the season - good news in my opinion, he was very impressive last year, making an impact with bat and ball.

Lancs have started their preseason well with 2 easy wins, it will all be a waste if we don't beat yorkshi*e though. Playing them 3 times in the preseason tbh, once in Dubai and a od and a 2day game at OT.

Anyway Lancs 276/7 (Loye 83) bt UAE 198ao by 78 runs
Lancs 255/9(Sutcliffe 54, Sutton 51, Flintoff 39) beat Essex 192ao(Hogg 4-29) by 63 runs

Good to see Simon Marshall going well aswell taking 3-35 and 3-32 in the 2 games, hope he has a good season this year.

Chris Lewis hits the comeback trail at 40

From cricinfo.

Only a pay-as-you-play contract for Surrey in the 20/20s, mind. If his head is right (huge if with him, obv) he strikes you as the kind of player who could do well in 20/20: bowls a bit, bats a bit & is (or was) quick around the field.

It looks like Marshall has outbowled Keedy. Why is Hogg coming on as 5th bowler with Croft ahead of him?

Ravi Bopara opening the bowling for Essex. 8-)

ECB have turned down registrations for Justin Kemp, Andrew Hall, Johan van der Wath, Wavell Hinds and Hamish Marshall as Kolpak players for this coming season. So that leaves Derby, Northants, Kent and Gloucester scrabbling for replacements. Don't think, however, its come as a massive shock to the clubs.

I expect a rush of kolpaks before the start of the season.
Northants will need to recruit an overseas player now maybe a fast bowler.
Expect offers to go to nel and langaveldt as kolpaks.
Sad thing, and still the ECB has bloacked 4 counties from signing ICL overseas players, surely they would have to sign replacements soon.
The kolpak thing must now be placing stress on south african cricket.

As you say both Nel and Langeveldt will be targets for the Twenty20 comps and as potential Kolpaks. Nel with his Northants links will be a strong contender to replace van der Wath. The qualifications now for a Kolpak in England is lowered further, to players that cannot get a side in India's Twenty20 comps or perhpas the type of player best suited to longer forms.

another win for Lancs...pretty easy over Sussex and Flintoff took 2/9 with the ball so things are looking good for the start of the season...just hope we destroy the yorkshi*s tonight

Season start soon Expect Fidel Edwards and Simon Jonesto do some damage in the Second Division but with only 15 full time pros in our squad, we will be up against it to maintain a Promotion challenge

But i am looking forward to the season
