I've just read that :D I'm sorry I doubted him.

Somerset have also announced that they have signed SA pace bowler Alfonso Thomas as back up for Charl & Caddy.

That should really be in inverted commas :) .

In all fairness to the guy, he looks nothing more than a club bowler but has always been able to get the job done. A deceptively successful bowler

Shane Bond has signed for Hampshire. And Sussex have signed Australian, Ryan Harris on a two year deal. Harris holds a British passport and will be a non-overseas player.

Alfonso was also kicked out of the Titans after falling out with captain Martin van Jaarsveld and coach Richard Pybus. His currently plying his trade with the Dolphins but only as a limited overs bowler. Can't see him being of much assistance at Taunton.

Yeah, I saw that. His Sheffield Shield figures suggest he's a bit of a plodder, but he'll probably clean up over here.

Wasn't it Thomas who drew some massively sarcastic comment from Nasser Hussain, whilst commentating on a televised match, about the standard of imports vs home produced players?

Yeah not wildly excited about this pick from Somerset. He'll probably end up a batting all-rounder, by the end of the Summer.

Have you not always been a bit of a fan. I remember you defending him quite strongly previously when I have suggested he is a pretty average cricketer (which he is, medium pace that can be effective when it swings a lot and an ordinary lower order bat).

An example of your opinion stated previously and I seem to recall you saying something along the lines that you rated him ahead of Nel.
South African all-rounder, very decent cricketer. Alfonso, made his debut for South Africa earlier this year against Pakistan (20/20) and he was unlucky not be apart of the 20/20 squad. Apparently Thomas is going Kolpak next year…

Yeah, I’m am a fan of Alfonso, as I said his a decent all-round cricketer but does not detract from the fact that the Titans kicked him out of their squad and on a Taunton road he will be cannon fodder.

Fair enough, the 2 opinions can certainly co-exist.. Though seeing his fall to a purely OD cricketer in SA domestic cricket and even his supporters not thinking he will be capable of making an impact of flat Taunton tracks its not suprising I feel a little validated in refusing to consider him one of the top SA bowlers.

SIMON JONES is going to have a great season
Your lot have signed Fidel Edwards, could be interesting.

I feel a slogan coming on.

"The County Championship, for players not good enough for either the ICL or IPL".

Anyone think it'll catch on........

Worcester now after Steve Magoffin to complete the first three months of the season as their overseas, before Fidel arrives.

Magoffin's had a decent season in Aus, picking up 29 wickets @ 23.31 in first-class matches. Useful addition if they capture him.

ICL players face county ban…

A number of counties face starting the 2008 season without their high-profile overseas players after it was revealed that anyone who has signed with the breakaway Indian Cricket League is unlikely to be given the necessary clearance to play by their own boards.
Any non-English player needs a "no objection certificate" (NOC) from their home board before being allowed to play in England, and it is believed that several, including New Zealand Cricket and the Pakistan Cricket Board, are refusing to issue them.
Shane Bond, who signed with the ICL last November, in effect had his career ended by NZC as a result, but earlier this month he signed for Hampshire for the 2008 season. However, without the NOC he will not be allowed to play.
Cricinfo has learnt that one Pakistan player - believed to be Yorkshire's Rana Naved-ul-Hasan - has already been declined an NOC and it seems likely that others, such as Mushtaq Ahmed and Mohammad Sami, will also be left out in the cold
