Filthy, disgusting performance by Somerset, I was looking forward to some cricket returning to the CG, by the time I got there, the two men and their dogs had gone home..

Hi all...Im back

I haven't used this forum in some time but thought Id pop my head in to give my thoughts on Durham so far this season. I have been to every game and the Hampshire away match and so far its been a misture of the good and bad.

Simply, we don't have enough top quality players to challenge for anything in the County Championship and I fear the season is turning into a relegation worry.

John Lewis for one is not by anyone's standards good enough at this level anymore. Firstly he cannot score runs and secondly he cannot stay in for more than 5 overs. At the crease he doesn't look like the solid, confident bastmen he used to be and he is nothing but a hindrance to the team and as long as he opens we will always loose a quick wicket.

And Muchall is pretty much the same. Although he can and has scored runs he gives his wicket away too easily and since his double hundred and century at the start of the season he has been totally out of form and instills no confidence. With him and Lewis in the side we are always going to loose quick wickets early on.

Dale Benkenstien is one of the best players we have ever had at this club. He is consistently superb and has won so many matches for us this season with bat and ball. One of THE best players in the county championship without a doubt.

Jimmy Maher has shown at times how darn good he can be.

Ottis Gibson....Always gets us an early wicket and although he concedes more runs than Id like. Still a real threat and when he gets going he is great with the bad

Phil Mustard....A POOR keeper...A horribly bad keeper but a match-winning, entertaining Bat

Callum Thorp....In superb form. One of the best bowlers in the CC at the moment.

Breesey....Nothing but a lame containing spinner

Graham Onions...This guy has pace but is a little inconsistent with wicket taking and control. An assest to the team though

Gary Scott...Even though he inspires no confidence, he scores runs and his off spin isn't too terrible

Pratty - Cannot buy a run for love nor money. In poor poor form and can't really cut it at this level. A fielding gem though

Mick Lewis....Agressive and had a good game over the weekend. I think he is a good bowler at this level but would like to see him leave at the end of the season so we can get a good overseas batsmen in to help Benks

Had a long discussion this weekend about how its a disgrace he has never played a test match. One of the most unlucky cricketers I can think of.

Who's your team Goughy?

I think we can class Benks and Lehmann together as the two most unfortunate cricketers in the game when it comes to test careers.

do you support England or SA? or both?
We are only in SA due to my wifes work so we have no ties to the country and in fact if she had not got pregenant again we would be leaving for Tanzania next month. We have extended here until the end of 2007.

Anyway, Who do I support? England all the way in Cricket. In Union its different but then Im a League man so I despise English Union and my favourite League player came from SA.

Well how many are there?
That's why I asked. Sean Rutgerson, the Salford prop, is South African IIRC.
I'd forgotten completely about Bloem, and was wandering if you were old enough to remember St Helens' two South African wingers in the 60's, Tom Van Vollenhoven and Len Killeen, who are the only other 2 that I can think of. Would have been a momentous day, a Leeds fan admitting to liking them, but alas, it's not to be.

I would agree his record in England has been very good but Dale did have the opportunities to impress and make positive noises in regard to a place in the test squad in the late 90's. His performances in the one day team for South Africa were abject* and subsequently was never thought of as anything but a good first class cricketer.

*Different game of course but the thought was he was being moulded to get a place in the test team once Daryll Cullinan had retired.

poor batting display from Lancashire but Fred's got two quick wickets( 6-1-11-2 with Key and Van Jaarsveld his wickets) and we are fighting back with Kent 64-3.

A couple more tonight and we'll be back in it.

Good to see young Cross hit some runs as well, must take some bottle to hit 72 from 56 when you come to the wicket at 102-6
