Haven't been on this thread for a while but I must come on just to say what a phenominal innings Ricky Ponting played yesterday evening.
I've not seen as adverse conditions in professional cricket, and he barely played a false stroke, let alone played-and-missed or gave a chance.
Would Matthew Hayden be capable of playing such an innings? I think not, personally.

It was pretty amazing. We all talk how good Hildreth is and its great he gets to play along side Ponting this year...could only do him good.

What conditions did he bat in? Why don't you think Hayden can play a good innings in those conditions?

It was underlights, the atmosphere was very humid and misty and the ball was moving all over the place.

Yeah it was a great knock by Ponting, even from the first ball he just looked in a class of his own....however I would have thought Hayden could have batted just as effectivly in those conditions

Well rain has pretty much ruined the County action today - but here is a round-up of how things stand at 16:41!

Sussex have beaten Middlesex by 143. '*** were 155 all out - Shah batting for most of the innings to make 60*. Mushtaq Ahmed took 5 - 83. James Kirtley - a not so past, but definitely a blast - took 3 - 37 off 19.2 overs.

Surrey have destroyed Lancashire by an innings and 55 runs. Cork made the only noteworthy contribution in the Lancashire innings of 260 by making a fantastic 109 off 92 balls, including 10 4s and 7 6s. Tim Murtagh bowled economically, but with no reward as Ormond took 3 - 60 and Azhar Mahmood and Bicknell both took 2 - 61. Doshi got hammered all over the park at 7.5 an over but took 2 - 50

Kent have just resumed their innings against Warwickshire and are 167 - 0. The Bears needs some wickets and must avoid defeat at all costs. A loss would give Kent the chance to get back into the Championship race. The Bears were all out for 457 with Bell making 121 and Powell 96.

Worcestershire are currently 347 - 8 with Bichel making 142 and Hick 66 - no other significant scorers to note. Louw has taken 5 - 63.

Durham and Somerset - no play.

After Hampshire were bowled out for 369, Glamorgan got close - reaching 349. D Thomas made 105 and the "other" Michael Powell made 89. Mask your anus - took 5 - 64. Hampshire are currently 28 - 0 - rain stopped play.

No play between Notts and Leics on Friday but Leics are in a tricky position at 142 - 7 chasing 490.

Yorkshire are 250 - 1 against Derbyshire. Wood is 119* and McGrath is 90*.

I know its hard on Key as he;s the top scorer and probably deserves it but i just feel the sooner Bell is in the england team the better! I just hope he doesnt get knocked back even more when Pieterson comes avaliable.
I don't think Pietersen will be an automatic Test pick immediately on qualifying.

ODI yes, but there's other players who would feel very aggrieved if he got in ahead of them.

Can't see them losing from here - Knight won't set a gettable run chase - but if we were to take the last 5 for 50 then a follow on might be funny.

And their captain resigns mid-game - what's going on there?!

Tell me about it! He says he wanted to concentrate on his batting..but he's averaged 59 this season!!
We've had a fantastic season. Final of the C&G, well placed to go up from Div 2 of the Totesport League and in with a good shout of staying in Div 1 of the CC too. So its not like we were in poor form.

News is that Bichel will get the job after the match...we'll see though.

Word I heard was Solanki or Batty.

Yet another reason Price's signing confuses me.

Also suggests they don't think Vikram is in danger of retaining his England spot!

If someone is going to be away from the county for a long time (ie playing for England), then he won't be any use as a skipper.

Shaun Tait has had a horrible debut for Durham, returning figures of 12-0-113-0 (21nb, 2w).
Meanwhile, Richard Johnson has hit 101* off 64 balls [100* off 63] (9x4, 6x6). Fastest hundred this season, I believe.

Tait bowls surely the worst spell of the season, his First-Class average rising by more than 2 as a result.
Durham must regret that signing!
In the same match, Ponting's First-Class average for the season, disappoitningly, falls below 100.
I thought when I heard they'd signed him for a few months "he really should average 100 in the Championship". Missed by 1.

It was nice to see Gavin Hamilton return some good figures in that match: 12-2-28-2. Considering he suffered from the yips, he has done really well to recover. I hope he goes on and does really well for Durham.

Tait's first spell of the match was 43/4 (14 nb) Maybe he's suffering from jetlag?
Meanwhile, Ponting has averaged 99 (SR: 84.37) in First-Class and 99.33 (SR: 99) in ListA. Missed the 100 in both of them! :p
