It's been a comparative run-fest today around most of the County grounds.

As far as we go, we could do with Starc here sharpish, lacking that bit of cutting edge without Bresnan there and Siddy can't be expected to do it every time. From what I've heard Starc should be playing in the next round of matches, so I'll be looking forward to see how he does. But today exposed the lack of quality 2nd and 3rd seamers we have atm, especially after the opening bowlers had used the new ball very well.

Patto's bowled pretty well this season so far as well to be fair but he's more of a first change bowler.

From all accounts it's the been a cracking innings, someone who was at the game today said it was one of the better innings he'd seen for a couple of seasons at Headingley by a opposition player.

Lets get it right, yes he's been disappointing on the bowling front the last couple of season, he seems pretty low on confidence and he's having a hard time getting back to where he was a few seasons ago. But luckily for Rashid he's got more than one string to his bow and he's still only just turned 24. The lad averages nearly 34 with the bat and scores Yorkshire plenty of runs down the order and will probably score lots more as he matures as a cricketer because he's got a good technique and a good enough batsman that could easily see him bat higher in the order.

The fact is spin bowling this time of year is very a very hard job and bowling leg spin is even harder.

He's got talent but he's shown a few times that at present he's more interested in having a good time rather than really applying himself and making the best of his ability. Some people just take longer to develop/ mature. Some don't want to and never do. Hopefully Swann could have a few words with him given he spent the first 10 years of his career pissing around but who knows what Swann would advise.

I'm sorry this sounds so judgemental and preachy. He can do what he wants - it's his life. I just always come at it from the pov of a national selector. The guy has maybe the potential to be a good international cricketer.

Scoreboards across the country looking a bit more like the early season pitches have settled down a little and begun to dry out.

No surprise that Glamorgan are in a minority of batting sides that have struggled today, only Marcus North in his first game able to resist a steady, if unspectacular, Derby attack to any great degree. As was mentioned in the thread earlier, Simon Jones making a rare appearance in four-day cricket, be interesting to see how he goes throughout the game.

Another rare event occurred at Canterbury where David Sales made his first ton in nearly two years. A shocking record for such a decent county batsman who has really struggled in the last couple of seasons, let's hope this is a start for him in turning his fortunes around. A handy contribution from James Middlebrook down at number seven evokes memories from last season.

My side, Essex, have struggled to get through Leicester, ironically Ramnaresh Sarwan giving the WI selectors another more than gentle nudge that he's still around with 117. Josh Cobb continues to catch the eye with another half-century. Essex have gone in with another all seam attack - Masters, Willoughby, Napier, and Mills, with no Greg Smith in the side, Tom Westley and Alviro Petersen have also had the chance to get their arm over. Quick wickets are essential early tomorrow.

The guy doesn't bowl well enough or bat well enough to hold down a spot in the Yorkshire team on one discipline alone.

He gets a gig as a package. But unless there's a massive improvement in one side of his game, and it may have to come at the expense of the other, I don't see him being an England player. At best, he might rival Patel for the number 7 in the subcontinent role. But if he can't push past Bresnan at Yorkshire in the batting order...

Yep, he's not one thing or the other.

I personally don't see him as being 'young' any more, even though he is in terms of years. Given his background and ethnicity I would be surprised if he gets much better than what he is now. I think he'll peak earlier, given he's of Asian descent and because he has already played so much cricket. He's a sort of raw talent/minor genius type player and they tend not to improve much. While spin bowlers should peak later I don't think he will because of all those things.

I just think it's very hard to bowl leg spin in general let alone in England where conditions aren't good, and naturally teams look for more steadier options
