No essex fan but I'd say it's conditions. I think he's in the squad for tomorrows county game. There isn't much work for frontline spinners at present and Essex have a couple of batsman who bowl spin (Westley and Smith occasionally). It's noticeable in county cricket that Borthwick(who is an excellent fielder and decent lower order bat) is played by Durham but doesn't bowl much but Briggs and Craddock who don't offer much other than their bowling aren't playing much at present.
I class myself as an Essex fan, and I agree with much of what The Egyptian said, I suspect quite strongly it is mainly to do with conditions, and the fact we have a couple of batsmen/all-rounders that can get through some spin overs should conditions favour the slower bowlers.
Well he wasn't the first Essex fan, so by Logan's Law logic he can't be an Essex fan at all. Woodster should be called something else or the first Essex fan will end up being called things like "Henry".

While I agree in concept, I can see why people would get annoyed at a player not retiring when they're past their sell by date but won't get dropped for reasons unrelated to performance.
People should be annoyed at the selectors then; not the player. It's not his job to decide things like that; only to give his all if he's selected.
