*Official* England v Ireland Test

The whole test match has a pointless feel to it and isn't helping either team.

To be fair to Ireland, its pretty much mission impossible. They have no domestic red ball structure and their survival as a cricketing nation depends on white ball cricket and that understandably has to be their main focus.T

For England, the match provides nothing in terms of Ashes preparation. I'm a fan of Ben Duckett but tonking a run a ball 150 against this attack won't help him one iota when he takes guard against Cummings and Co.
That's the problem. ICC should has a minimum say that all Test Playing nations have a First Class Structure or at the very least have an XI another country (Zimbabwe have in South Africa in the past for example). FIFA insist on every country having a domestic league and aside from Liechtenstein they do.

Seems to me there's also an obvious difference in fitness levels between the two sides. Pope and Duckett were still running lightning singles after scoring 150+. The Irish bowlers looked knackered by noon.

One of the things that got Ireland test status in the first place was that they had a FC tournament. It got shut down by Covid and apparently Cricket Ireland won't afford to get it up and running again till at least 2024.

I think Full Membership in the ICC and Test status should be separate things and that their should be a 2nd tier FC competition like the WCL for the upcoming teams to get used to the format against similar strength opposition. The current financial climate is against such, but I stand by my wishful thinking.

What do you do in this situation if you're Ireland , pretty hopeless and pointless .
Personal pride - there's enough time for one or two to make a contribution, possibly even get on the honours board. Not like Ireland are going to be overrun with test match opportunities.

Gonna be so funny when we do exactly this to Australia.

tbf I should be balanced. It’ll probably be more like 480/5 at this point against them.

If you were to pick a combined Ireland/Australia test team how many Ireland players would you have in it?🤔
