*Official* England Tour of Sri Lanka 2018

Groundking

International Debutant
Who would have thought a man who was born in South Africa and plays his cricket in England would be inept against pace but a god against spin. The guy's an enigma.

True, but it's one thing to replace a spinner with another quick when we're not in the SC. Quite another to replace an opener who's made runs, especially when the domestic cupboard is so bare.
It's still a relatively small sample size, but there can't be too many specialist batsmen who have such a marked difference between their home and away averages. There's a nice symmetry in his home average of 17 & his away figure being 71 though.

Well done to the boy; he does seem a genuinely good guy, but his orthodox, slightly stiff legged MO does make me worry he's still going to struggle with movement at pace.

Hope I'm wrong though.

Stapel

International Regular
Honestly it's pretty rare for an England player to appear to have playing in Asia as their specialist subject, so we forgot that Jennings made more sense as a horses for courses pick than just playing because he's the incumbent.

It's kinda tragic that Jennings performing here (as he did in India) is likely to have him play all summer. According to the Beeb he now averages 57 vs spin and 18 vs pace.

If Leach takes wickets this series it's not going to mean he plays at home, it means he did his job. Can be true of batsmen too
This has me thinking. I can't remember any examples of horses-for-courses-openers. My gut feeling says it's a bowler's thing.
Apart from that, Jennings has not convinced me yet, he is that good vs spin.

Well he is certainly better against spin than pace.

Maybe Brian Close being brought back to face WI in 1976? Although I'm not sure he initially returned as an opener, although he ended up in that role in the famous Old Trafford test. Maybe Chris Broad, who did OK at home to WI in 1984 but was dropped for the subsequent tour of India and then recalled to tour Aus a couple of years later.

Haven't had a chance to have a good look at this match until this morning. Should be an English victory, but then again I won't be surprised if SL push England pretty hard here in the 4th innings.

Maybe, Dimuth is the kind of guy who can go big in the 2nd dig, but I can't really think of anyone else who is in good enough form that would be able take the challenge to the spinners on a day 4 Galle wicket, SL have been beaten at their own game here big time.

It certainly looks that way, doesn't it?

Can't count the Lankans out just yet though, Dimuth & Kaushal did a good job steering the team to stumps last night, if those guys can lay a solid foundation today the stage could be set for Dhananjaya, Mathews & co to forge a great escape. Moeen is looking pretty dangerous out there.

Sri Lanka have been poor. Drops and gifted wickets. What happens when you lose innit

I'm sure the buzz over the next week will be about how the series is so one sided and oh dear competitive cricket, and then those people will fall mysteriously silent when SL get their **** together and beat us in one of the other tests.
