congrats to England, thoroughly deserved as I said earlier. Also, very, very classy of Root and his boys to let Herath leave the field first and also the lap of thanking the England fans too:thumbup:..that is the display of being role models off the field too..

Always that added satisfaction of winning away from home. Win built on the back of the less established players, and Ali. Foakes and Curran first innings, Leach and Ali with the ball, Jennings second innings. No Cook or Bairstow, little from Root, Anderson, Stokes.

Probably get turned over by the SL seamers in Pallakele now.

Root at 3 for the next test, Stokes at 4, Ali drops down the order for me. Foakes stays and if England are considering picking Bairstow it is at the expense of Rashid or Curran depending on the pitch. Other than the first morning this has been a tremendous performance by England.

Foakes said in the MoM interview that he doesn't really know if he'll play in the 2nd test because he thinks Bairstow is going to come back in. Wouldn't read too much into it, since he was probably just trying to stay grounded but I wonder if they would actually force Foakes out of the team if they had to. Bairstow really doesn't force himself back into the team imo, unless he bats 3 or 4 without the gloves. But then that would mean Ali would have to find a place in the middle order, and someone will inevitably have to be shifted out. With the notion that seamers will probably bowl more overs at Pallekelle, I could see Rashid being left out from the starting XI, and rather than picking another bowler, Anderson, Curran and Stokes will just bowl more overs between them.

Also, pretty good weightlifting exercise for Mathews and Mendis there

He's not getting dropped. Bairstow if he comes in will have to play as a batsman and if he sulks about it as he did in the summer then tough. If the pitch at Kandy looks like it's going to rag they will pick the same team i would expect. If it looks more seamer friendly they may replace Rashid with a quick and swap Bairstow for Curran.

Bairstows red ball form has not merited an instant return to the side imo.

Yeah but it was also immediately after he hit a double ton, so he wasn't about to get dropped.
Look, for a man that divorced his wife just days after he publicly denied even knowing her, coming out of retirement is hardly out of the question :p

That's how I'd go, for what it's worth. Jonny Red to #3, Mo slots in somewhere from 6-8.
