**Official** England in The West Indies

As a West Indies fan, this series has obviously been profoundly dissapointing for me, but I have to cling to the vastly improved bowling performances as a significant positive to take from the debacle.

Even without the likes of Lawson, Taylor, Rampaul, Powell, Richardson, Thomas, Nurse and any other contenders I've forgotten, the Windies have put together an attack that, on the helpful pitches encountered in this series, has been very effective.

Encouragingly, the fact that two of the bowlers have genuine express pace, two can swing the ball fairly consistently and one is able to hit the seam and maintain a consistent line and length, suggests that this quartet may be effective in less helpful conditions.

I could never have imagined that the batting would be this bad. The lively pitches and disciplined bowling have exposed dodgy techniques and temperaments alike and I see no immediate solution.

There are no young batsmen demanding, or even politely asking for, inclusion.

Daren Ganga, who from memory was dismissed or dropped 17 times in the 1 test match, should now be banished for good and Dwayne Smith should join him until he can be introduced to the concept of shot selection.

The apparent progress made by Gayle and Sarwan during the South African tour was clearly misleading - they've both got serious flaws to iron out - but there is still no real case for dropping them because they are the best available.

Chanderpaul and Lara, the two proven world class batsmen, have been particulary disappointing, but it's to be hoped that that this is largely a question of poor form as both remain absolutely fundamental to hopes of a quick turnaround in fortunes.

well i think the pitches have played a major role in the WI batting performances in this series. most of them having played on those lifeless pitches had no clue while the rest who apparently had been known as "world class performers" failed due their clearly horrible technique. that being said i was impressed with devon smith's performance and i would like to see the inclusion of marlon samuels after he has recovered from injury.

we all know what i think of gayle but sarwan has been IMO the best batsman in the series for the WI. he has showed resolve and great grit and being fairly young he can learn to fix the only real flaw in his technique-the shuffling across the stumps and playing on the on side.

What?? Jacobs and Smith have both showed better resolve and grit than Sarwan.

I agree that Marlon Samuels, if and when his injury problems are resolved, will be a shoo-in for the side. Devon Smith has also shown enough to suggest he may be a mainstay.

Along with Mr M, I disagree with you about Sarwan. The shuffling across has replaced the hook/pull as a chronic weakness (though there were signs, in Barbados, that he'd been working on it) and there were other poor dismissals besides. He, and the rest of the side, need to show resolve and grit as a matter of course, rather than - as the case seems to be currently - as an occasional unexpected bonus.

i found sarwan technically better than smith and that he showed more grit too.i guess the horrid shot that smith played to get out in the 2nd test influenced that decision.
jacobs IMO has definetly been found it.....not that im saying he cant work on it but to say that a batsman who has been found out is the best in the series(although u might say sarwan has been found out too....but sarwan seemed to have been working on it in barbados) is mighty dissapointing

Liam or anyone can they confirm this?

As I have read a couple of sites and some say Sylvester Joseph has been added to the squad, while others say he has replaced Shivnarine Chanderpaul

Cricinfo have no mention of the dropping of Shivnarine Chanderpaul and have the squad as:-

West Indies squad
Brian Lara (capt), Ramnaresh Sarwan, Chris Gayle, Daren Ganga, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ricardo Powell, Sylvester Joseph, Dwayne Smith, Ryan Hinds, Ridley Jacobs (wk), Tino Best, Pedro Collins, Corey Collymore, Fidel Edwards.

CricInfo are wrong. The WICB's website confirms that the 13-man squad for Antigua does not include Chanderpaul.

Cheers,

Mike
