***Official*** England in India

The Indian team will have a major difficulty getting 20 wickets with this bowling attack. Irfan, Sreesanth, Kumble and Harbhajan are all fine bowlers, but it's always a tough ask when there is no fifth bowler. England, on the other hand, have a more versatile selection, but we don't know how effective they'll be, but frankly, the Indian team won't look any weaker with a bowler in place of Mohammed Kaif. When you see a spinner brought on early in the innings, you know something's not right out there.

Cook looked excellent against the seamers (not they offered much). He struggled initially against harbhajan but seems to adapted well.

For someone listening on radio, Cook seems to be playing well. What's his technique like?
his technique looks decent, its hardly a test in such flat conditions anyways. more importantly however, whether a message was sent out to him or not, it appears as though hes looking far more comfortable now against harbhajan and kumble and hes starting to get on the front foot fairly often. that shows a very good understanding of the game.
as far as the state of the game is concerned, i think the wicket of bell puts england marginally behind, but in their favor they are batting first. i dont trust the flintoff-jones-blackwell combo and i think they'll be blown away quite quickly. therefore the bulk of the scoring has to be done by the cook-pietersen and collingwood partnerships.

Cook hasn't been tested a lot. He looked okay against the poor balls, dicey on some deliveries from both the trundlers and spinners. Not the most convincing but good enough given the Indian bowling (as shown by the fact that he has survived).

Eng 89-2 at Lunch.

I believe India will be happy with the situation, they came back strongly to get two quick wkts after a dissapointing spell by Irfunk.

Interesting how quickly Irfan The Great became "Irfunk"...really interesting.

What are the odds on Strauss still opening the batting for Eng by the next Ashes?
certainly his success in SA is remarkable given how ordinary hes looked recently. its not just the fact that his technique is horrible, but his ability against spin is extremely questionable.

Well, how many times would his ability against spin have been questioned by SA spinners?

i'd say still fairly safe, he has got to really fair in India & in the home season (which i doubt) for Cook to come in and replace him by then.

oh yes i agree and its something i questioned immediately after his success in SA. However off late hes not just looked ordinary against spin, hes looked ordinary against pace too, even in pakistan his technique looked very ordinary.

IMO, Tresco is so far ahead of Strauss it's not funny and with a youngster like Cook coming through, his hold on the opening position could be extremely tenuous.

On the up side, by all accounts he is extremely level-headed and hard-working. Plus, with Vaughan in real trouble physically, he could well serve Eng better elsewhere but it certainly appears as though the honeymoon is over.

kumble needs to vary his pace against Pietersen a lot more. infact the slower(with flight) he bowls the better. Pietersens technique of playing with bat in front of pad is always going to make him somewhat more susceptible to the slower deliveries.
