I'd like to know the last time any side scored 500 on a competitive pitch.

Pakistan scored 636 when they beat England in the 3rd Test.

The point is England's batsmen nearly always leave it to the bowlers to win the game, you can hardly ever pick a game and say 'right England's batsmen have put them in a great position there'.
