All three of those are valid, but my genuine reason for why he should still be in the team is #2 ... that he still looks like he hasn't lost it, at least to me. How long should we wait? I'd say give him this Mumbai test and the overseas series' against West Indies and South Africa to prove that he belongs in the team. The imminent World Cup is irrelevant here as it's his test spot that is being questioned. He's certainly great enough that we can give him that long of a period, take that risk to see if he's still worth it. The team is always above the individual, but Sachin is worth a two-series trial-run.
the "trial run" has been going on for some time now.....you are talking about continuing it for another couple of series....:)

anyway let's just hope he comes good and shuts everyone up.....:)

As for Ganguly, his exclusion was about more than just loss of form and an undeserved spot in the team. It had to do with indiscipline, tension with the coach and above all, terrible management of a delicate situation by the BCCI/selectors/media which eventually resulted in a disaster.
Oh please...dont bring in your conspiracy theories once again. When he came back into the team for Pakistan series, he was perfectly fine but somehow his detrators always find an excuse bash him by making unfounded accusations.

It was that finger wagging coach of yours who tried to stir up things once again and tried to divert media's attention to bashing Ganguly after India's test series loss in Pakistan. But this time the board asked him to keep his mouth shut.

I am hoping that he fails and so does VVS Laxman (if included), because if they succeed they will buy another free ride for next 5 series and in a way block Kaif/Raina/XYZ's entry into the team again.

Dodgy tummy for Cook. England having no luck at all this series, India being a hard enough tour with a full strength side.
Udal, Shah, Anderson in, Bell opening 8-) well I hope he proves me wrong. Toss won by India electing to bowl on a grassy damp surface.

I care not, I've been drinking since 10:30am yesterday, Paddy's Day :) 18hrs straight, huzzah.

Brandy, cricket, meat, women; in that order please.

marc's sarcasm aside, what we are not getting from you and jono and people saying sachin should still be an integral part of the test team are good, solid reasons why....you are all either saying: 1. give it a rest because he is never going to be dropped whatever his performance is or 2. he is showing promise and will come good or 3. he deserves to have the team carry him during this extended run of bad form...or a combination of some or all of these....answer to 1. may be true, but still doesn't make it right or fair on the other team members(especially the ones that are performing) or hopefuls waiting in the wings...answer to 2. how long do we wait? answer to 3. this is exactly the kind of adulation that gives him the stupid demi-god status among irrational fans, he is a great player but he shouldn't be above the team or in the team to its detriment....
I just brought out and maintain - a string of bad scores does not necessarily mean player X should be dropped. It depends on variables among which are comparing with the player who will replace him and the belief of the selectors at the point of time.

Now person 1 can feel he should be dropped. Person 2 can feel he shouldn't be as he would be useful in the future. The decision should entirely be based with the interest of the team in mind.

In the two schools of thoughts I stand with retaining Tendulkar but do not grudge some one else for feeling the opposite. Even after high scores in the subcontinent say a player might be dropped if it is known that he cannot bat for toffees on bouncy wickets and a team is touring abroad. Selection is always a tricky issue and is based not just on past statistics.

No one is above the team as you rightly said and Tendulkar isn't too.. Indian cricket didn't stop in the period where Tendulkar was injured. It existed before him and will exist after him.

So you were hoping Ganguly failed in the 3rd test against Pakistan too eh?
Yes. Because his presence was creating un-necessary controversy and distraction for rest of the team. I sympathise with Ganguly's situation but at the same time I also feel that because of him other 10-15 players were regularly hounded by media and their performance were under question. Dravid as captain was under pressure too, sometimes to include him in the team, sometimes to give the right answer to the media, and as much as I dislike Coach Chappell's ways, he was under lot of pressure too.

So yes, I wanted him out of the team and hence hoping that he failed in Pakistan.

Well I am not surprise that India elected to field, Dravid knew that If England won toss, Freddie would have batted and that's why they included 3 seamers to take advantage of the early morning conditions, and from what I hear there is some grass left on the pitch as well.
