Pete Young slightly wrong
by Abhinav Shankar

As some of you may have heard, Peter Young has been showing some discontempt towards the outstanding articles by myself in the heralded magazine that is Horse and Hound. We would like you, our precious reading public, to know that we only deliver factual and insightful articles, and my many qualifications show that I am not 'learning'.

We give you Exhibit A. http://forum.cricketweb.net/showpost.php?p=690102&postcount=257
This clearly shows that Peter Young is silly and downright ignorant.

Exhibit B. http://forum.cricketweb.net/showpost.php?p=693109&postcount=2318
I mean... eew. Yucky poo.

Maybe if Smith spent more time watching the ball rather then Watts action he would have lasted longer then his 2 ball innings...

"Need a tissue, Graeme?" says Dave Watt
Watt answers critics

Dave Watt has issued the following short statement, as published in The West Australian.

"If Mr Smith could put as much effort into his batting as he does making wild and unsupported claims, he'd have a far better record.

I have been playing cricket at a high level for many years, and never had anyone question the legitimacy of my bowling action. I will continue bowling with my current action regardless of the accusations, if the umpires and match referees share the same opinion of Mr Smith, they surely would have cited me of chucking by now. If and when something is made official, my supporters and I will continue to regard these claims as nothing but rubbish"

Classic Matches: CW Red vs CW Colts FC - 11th September
by Abhinav Shankar

Thrilling-run chases. Close victories. Despair and defeat. Old-timers, new-stars. Season Nine of the Cricket Web Development League Season was arguably the best yet, with five teams participating, all of them wanting to be the best. There were some classic encounters, and Horse & Hound is there to re-live some exceptional matches, that had other nations looking in awe at the immense talent in the Webhead state system.

CW Red vs CW Colts FC - 11th September
Red - Mørk, Dobson, Dauth, Markus, Robbins(c), Gray, G.N. Nayak, Loganathan, Watt, Cameron, Kennett
Colts - Mamesh, Hancock, Towns, Malthus-Howell, Cook, Jasotharan, Tucker, G. Nayak, Comley, Thomas, Wright(c)

The first match of Season Nine lived up to the hype. On paper, it looked as though Cricket Web Red had it over the Colts, with a fearsome bowling attack and an experienced batting line-up. There were an incredible nine debuts for the just-formed Colts with only Daniel Towns and newly-crowned captain/former red-paceman Kyle Wright. Much fuss had been made on the weak Colts team, and questions were asked on whether they deserved to compete against such high quality opposition sides. The only thing the Colts had going for them was the Reds knew little about most of the players on the opposition, and that certainly proved to be a huge advantage.

Skipper Marc Robbins won the crucial toss, and decided to bat. Openers Dobson and Mørk walked out to the middle. Wright came streaming in, delivered a ball just outside off-stump... which Mørk duly left. The score was on 52, when Hancock bowled a superb delivery which Mørk could only nick and it was held by `keeper Jasotharan. The rest of the Reds side struggled against the new bowling attack and were out for a mere 252. Only Dobson really made an impact with a patient 85. Opening bowler Thomas took the figures for the Colts taking 4/54, three of whom were Dauth, Markus and Robbins.

Cricket Web Red - 252 AO off 83.3 (Dobson 85, H. Mørk 30, Thomas 4/54)

The untested pairing of Mamesh and Hancock started things well for the Colts with an opening stand of 67, with dashing strokeplay from Mamesh in particular who was striking them at better than a run a ball. But Loganathan went right through Hancock, out for 31, and Mamesh followed soon after. Loganathan and Nayak went on to wreck the Colts innings and had them done for 226. Considering Watt and Kennett were reasonably unpenetrative, this effort was all the more great, as the Reds showed they would not easily be beat. Brother on the opposition, G. Nayak, kept the score respectable with an unbeaten 44 which included a towering six off his namesake.

Cricket Web Colts - 226 AO off 73.5 (G. Nayak 44*, Mamesh 35, Hancock 31, Loganathan 4/45, G.N. Nayak 4/60)

The Reds set out to bat again, knowing a score of around 200+ should be enough to get them home, on a pitch that was getting steddily better for the bowlers. However, Wright and Thomas had fired up, and they rocked the Reds. Dobson was the first to go, padding up to Wright and gone for 2 in the third over. Mørk struggled against bowlers he knew little of, and Thomas went right through him when on 10. Only Dauth offered much reply, as the Reds were shattered, gone for only 152 and every Colt that bowled a ball got a wicket.

Cricket Web Red - 152 AO off 52.2 (Dauth 43, Wright 3/37)

The Colts only needed 179 to win on the third day, but conditions were cloudy and the experienced duo of Kennett and Watt were steamed up and out for blood, and maybe even a few wickets. Their intimidating short-pitched bowling shook up the Colts. Mamesh was out to Kennett in only the second over and Hancock joined him soon after, with only 14 on the board. Towns had no answer to Watt`s bouncer, and gloved it to the `keeper, gone for 5. After smacking Kennett for a big six, Cook was caught brilliantly by Dobson and the K-man got his revenge. The score was 29/4, and the Reds were well on their way to producing an outstanding victory.
Big-talking Jasotharan joined Malthus-Howell in the middle in what would be a telling partnership. They put on 72 as Jasotharan decided attacking was the best form of defense, smacking 47 off 43. But Kennett and Watt came steaming back, reducing the Colts from 150/6, to 150/9 and Malthus-Howell departed with a well made 50. Captain Kyle Wright joined debutant Thomas in the middle, and they showed that what they could do bowling, they could do batting twice as well. Their partnership of 29 won their team the game, as Thomas stole a single off Cameron. The ground erupted, as the Colts players burst onto the field embracing both Thomas and Wright, who had starred in the match with bat, ball and brains.

Cricket Web Colts 179/9 off 60 (Malthus-Howell 50, Jasotharan 47, Kennett 6/51, Watt 3/52)

The Reds were shattered, with captain Marc Robbins clearly down-heartened. Apart from Dobson`s innings, the batting was woeful, but he could look at his players bowling performances as inspiration. It certainly proved a good lesson to the other Development League sides, as the Cricket Web Colts boldly proclaimed that they belonged at the top level, and could match it with anyone.

Cricket Web Red 1st Innings 252 all out
Cricket Web Colts 1st Innings 226 all out
Cricket Web Red 2nd Innings 152 all out
Cricket Web Colts 2nd Innings 179 for 9

Cricket Web Colts won by 1 wicket.

It truly was the making of the Colts as a Dev League franchise. Without that sterling victory, who knows what might have happened.

"I'll smash ya" says Russel Crowe
Hollywood hardnut, Russel Crowe, added fuel to the war of words between Proteas skipper Graeme Smith and CW XI paceman Dave Watt, during an open interview with Gilberto Silva.

"Dave Watt is nothing," Crowe said, nibbling on an English scone and sipping on calmomile tea. "He's big - he's bustling - but otherwise he has nothing. I challenge him to put his money where his mouth is - come to my palatial mansion in Coffs Harbour, Dave, and I'll show you how we do it in the ghetto." Crowe spoke of how seeing Watt's mullet brought him not only discomfort, but actual phsyical pain. "What's the hardest thing he's ever done? Hung someone using only his mullet? Hah. I've thrown a telephone at a hotel concierge."

"Like I was saying to Joaquin Phoenix, who played my arch enemy in the blockbuster hit Gladiator, you don't want to be on my bad side. Because that's when **** goes down. Anyone who has seen A Beautiful Mind would know what I'm talking about." Crowe then issued a challenge to Dave Watt. "Come on big fella, let's rumble, my turf in Coffs Harbour.. or even yours, the Perth Salvation Army depot. Either way, you'll know why they call me Cinderella Man."

Russell Crowe Found Dead!

Cause of death reported to be suffocation through hanging. Located around his neck was a long, mullet like, haircut.

In other unrelated news, Dave Watt showed off his new haircut to his teammates today, who all roared with approval.

More info to come on Crowe...

Classic Matches: CW Blue vs CW Green OD - 22nd September
by Abhinav Shankar

Thrilling-run chases. Close victories. Despair and defeat. Old-timers, new-stars. Season Nine of the Cricket Web Development League Season was arguably the best yet, with five teams participating, all of them wanting to be the best. There were some classic encounters, and Horse & Hound is there to re-live some exceptional matches, that had other nations looking in awe at the immense talent in the Webhead state system.

CW Blue vs CW Green OD - 22nd September
Blue - Cloete, Camps, De Silva, Fuller(c), Wilshere, Crampton, Jellett, Halsey, Collins, Patrick, Demeza
Green - Garven(c), Malone, Goff, Feeney, Bharat, Lezama, Verghese, Cunningham, Rose, Rai, Hoy

A fierce rivalry was establishing between these two teams, and this match certainly fuelled the fire. The sides were evenly matched, though Green certainly had more all-round options, making for a long batting line-up. There was no questioning the talent of both bowling parts of the sides. Blue had the pace of Demeza and Patrick, backed up by the accuracy of Collins, the leg-spin of Halsey and the fifth bowler duties shared between the capable Camps and Fuller. Green was not to be forgotten, with the young and fearsome frontline pace attack of Rose, Hoy and Cunningham.

Green won the toss and elected to bat, even with tricky conditions. Much of the innings relied on captain Andrew Garven to back up his decision. Garven and fellow opener Malone got off to a slowish start, making 34 off 9 overs before Malone played on to Patrick. Steady progress was being made, as the Green skipper made his 50, full of clever singles and twos all around the ground. He fell for 56 off 96 to Camps, and it was game on at 118/3 after 30 overs. Green looked to up the run-rate for the next ten overs, but Demeza was brought back on, as he and Halsey kept it tight. They grabbed 3 wickets in 6 balls to reduce Green to 184/7 with only 6 overs left. But the Green machine made the most of some lacklusture Collins overs, making 30 runs off his last three overs. Patrick took two late wickets, and Green ended up on 228/9. Garven was the mainstay, but good support from Feeney, Bharat and Lezama helped.

Cricket Web Green 228/9 off 50 (Garven 56, Halsey 3/37, Patrick 3/43)

So Blue needed 229 for victory and the crowd could sense something huge was about to happen. The feeling was justified when opener Camps nicked it towards first slip... where `keeper Lezama leapt in front to take an absolute screamer. And just when Blue looked to rebuild, Hoy grabbed Cloete, and had Blue 52/2. But then, as Fuller joined De Silva in the middle, the entertainment started. The pair turned it on smacking ten boundaries with timing, power and precision. Cricket Web Blue were going along nicely, with a good run-rate, and were playing Green right out fo the contest. With the score at 129/2, that man Garven went through De Silva with a lovely off-cutter, to make it 129/3 and leave the Greens with a flicker of hope. But Wilshere picked up where De Silva left off with some beautiful strokeplay at a run a ball. At the end of the 36th over Blue were 167/3 and looking extremely comfortable. And then a man by the name of Andrew Garven had Fuller caught in the deep to make it 176/4 after 37.
That was all the inspiration the Green seamers needed, and they let rip. Rose got Crampton, 194/5, eight overs left. He struck again to get Jellett, 208/6, six overs left. As Garven finished his spell of 2/47, Hoy struck to make it 214/7 with four overs left. There was only one run off the 3rd last over and then Hoy struck AGAIN getting Collins to make it 218/8 with two overs to play. Ben Wilshere couldn`t get enough of the strike, and could only stand there, watching the carnage up the other end. Eleven runs needed off the last two overs and two wickets remaining. Rose bowled a beauty conceeding only three runs, to make it 8 from the final over.
Wilshere was on strike, with Nathan Hoy streaming in. Wilshere smacked it towards mid-wicket... where Cunningham made a brilliant save, and made it only a single. 7 off 5 for the win. Hoy ran in and Patrick went for the big one towards mid-on... and was caught on the boundary! 7 off 4 needed, and with Demeza at the crease, Green had done enough. Wilshere needed a four off the last ball, but couldn`t score as he played and missed outside off.

Cricket Web Blue 225/9 off 50 (De Silva 67, Fuller 52, Wilshere 51*, Hoy 4/35)

Cricket Web Green`s Captain Andrew Garven had led the way with a solid innings and key wickets and took MOTM. Nathan Hoy was superb with the ball and was the main reason of the collapse, and the end result. One had to feel for Ben Wilshere, who played a spectacular innings, but in the end he lacked the support that the Green batsmen had given to their captain. This match started an intense fierceness between the sides, one which spurred the sides on to numerous other heated contests as the season went on.

Mørk goes Berserk!!
Loddy Twinshins

Today was an eventful day in history as CW Red batsman Håkon Mørk, playing for County side Yorkshire, went berserk in Yorkshire's dominating win over over Kent.
Mørk starred with the bat, hitting a quickfire 27* off just 14 balls, taking Yorkshire to a commanding total of 272/6. The innings was most unusual for Håkon, as he is usually overlooked for the One Day fixtures, and plays a very defensive game. However two towering sixes, two fours, and 7 quick singles certainly showed that Håkon is sick of being overlooked. The Kent batsmen, perhaps scared by the rabid wicketkeeper behind them were unable to get even close to the target, as they wallowed to 200/9.

Final result
Yorks 272/6 beat Kent 200/9 by 72 runs

Cricket Web XI - Champions Trophy - Marks Out Of 10
by Abhinav Shankar

Brendan Goff - 8.5 - Very strong tournament for the skipper. Never cracked 100, but was crucial in big matches against South Africa, England and Sri Lanka. An excellent strike rate helped the team.

Nathan Hoy - 9 - Absolutely brilliant. Excelled in every game except against Australia and in the Final where he was inexplicably not given use of the new ball. His 4/49 against Pakistan in a losing cause was one of the spells of the tournament.

Marc Robbins - 8 - Came in with not many overs left on more than a few occasions, and was superb at giving other batsmen the strike, and even hitting a few himself. Could have done better with the ball and his economy was not what he had hoped.

Ian Markus - 9.5 - Markus really dominated as opening batsman. Numerous attacks were given no chance from the word go as Ian cracked 4 scores of 50 or more. As the tournament went on, Markus just got better.

Liam Camps - 7.5 - Too unpredictable to be a real force. The team needed his bowling to be more effective, and he only had one good performance. He played three brilliant innings, but the rest was well below-par.

Chris Butler - 6.5 - Couldn`t go on with the many starts he made. He played decently, but found 500 ways to get out.

Ash Chaulk - 5.5 - Only one important score in the final, and his `keeping was below par. With stiff competition, he will really need to show his dedication to the side if he wants to keep his spot.

Dave Watt - 9 - Another stellar performance. No-one can ask more of Watt, as every game he performed, whether getting wickets or keeping the runs down. Didn`t get the numbers that Hoy got, but now has everyone`s respect.

Neil Pickup - 8 - Two big hauls, but not a lot else. Kept the runs down on most occasions, but didn`t perform in the big matches.

Kyle Wright - 4.5 - Didn`t bowl like the Kyle we all know. Decent in the final, but not a good tournament at all.

David Kearsley - 2.5 - Not much for David to talk about. One decent, unimportant innings, and not much else.

Daniel Towns - 1.5 - Poor Daniel looked out of sorts, and will be looking for a strong Development League Season.

Mullet murder weapon sold on eBay
In what was a first time occurence, the long flowing mullet used in the murder of Russell Crowe was nearly immediately sold on eBay.

The winner of the auction wished to remain anonymous, but sources say the bidder's name begins with 'D' and ends with 'ave Watt'.

In a completely unrelated story, Dave Watt was seen playing for West Australia in the ING Cup sporting a mullet that had regrown in 24 hours.
