Pressure On!

The Cricket Web XI prepares to face the team that it has won most frequently against, but they do under immense pressure. The expectation for a series victory in Sri Lanka is huge, with recent experience in India and a 1-1 record in Sri Lanka.

Alas, the truth remains as clear as ever - 6 wins, 21 losses. That is the dismal Test match record of the Cricket Web XI. It is not just the team that will be under pressure, but individual players also enter the tour with the hope of exorcising some personal demons.

Andrew P. Cloete
Andrew Cloete has struggled over the course of his last 3 series. He showed some semblance of his best in India, scoring a century with an average of 42.71, but that stands as his lone century in his last 27 innings. Indeed, his previous ton was against Bangladesh, back in Season 6/7. In Cloete's last 23 innings, spanning 3 series, he has scored just 688 runs at a startling average of 31.27.

For a man who was once averaging over 55 with a number 1 ranking, the returns have been miserable. With that in mind, Andrew Cloete will hope to return to somewhere near his best if he is to assist Cricket Web in its quest.

Test Career Average (Bat): 51.10
Test Average vs Sri Lanka (Bat): 45.05

Brendon J. Goff
As always, Brendon Goff enters a series under close media scrutiny. His captaincy record of 2 wins in 20 Tests will once again be under the spotlight, as much as his sub-30 batting average at the helm. Simply put, Goff must step up or the criticism is sure to grow to unparalleled levels.

Test Career Average (Bat): 28.61
Test Average vs Sri Lanka (Bat): 22.22

Neil S. Pickup
The clear number one bowler in the Cricket Web lineup, Pickup hasn't quite performed like it recently. Pickup took 18 wickets at an average of 25 against South Africa in Season 8, but when we look at his efforts in last 6 series against teams other than South Africa, we see a paltry average of 34.51. Indeed, Neil Pickup has averaged under 30 in only 3 Test series in his career, going so far as to average over 37 against the likes of Bangladesh.

The last time he was in Sri Lanka, Pickup performed creditably, however. His 14 wickets came at 29.36 apiece. Overall Pickup has 31 of his 121 Test wickets against Sri Lanka - in 9 Tests. The pressure is on for him to perform, but he will be keen that he has a chance against the team that is statistically his favourite opponent.

Test Career Average (Bowl): 33.65
Test Average vs Sri Lanka (Bowl): 30.84

Simon G. Fitzsimmons
It is no secret that Simon Fitzsimmons loves to play against Sri Lanka. Almost 30% of his Test runs have come against Sri Lanka and he's never averaged less than 40 in a series against them. History is on Fitzsimmon's side, and he needs that it be.

Under a cloud of just 23 runs in his last 6 Test innings, Fitzsimmons was displaced from the opening spot it seemed he had made his own for most of his CW career. Threatened to permanently fall out of the plot as pertaining to the future of CW cricket, Fitzsimmons must try to hold on to any opportunity he gets on the short tour of Sri Lanka.

Test Career Average (Bat): 29.81
Test Average vs Sri Lanka (Bat): 43.05

With all the calls for mass exodus of underperforming veterans, this series could be crucial in the careers of several Cricket Web players. The demands for a series victory intensify, and the senior players must step up if it is to occur... or at least that's one theory.

indeed Pressure is on most of the squad to keep their spots, especially if people in the dev league hit form.

Pietersen Takes On Weber

Kevin Pietersen has lashed back at the insults of Cricket Web Green spinner Tarick Weber. Weber referred to the tourists as "English pigs" and Pietersen responded vehemently:

"Pigs, eh? Weber is not even deserving to smell our equipment. We've beaten the best, and now we are the best. I just think he should have some respect. He can't even get into his country's crap Test team."

Pietersen then issued a warning for Weber, "Watch out young man. We'll teach you some respect."

Michael Vaughan could not be contacted for comment on the issue.
