Watt bowls Webheads home
Cricket Web XI vs Nicky Oppenheimer XI
Randjesfontein
Allan Donald stole the spotlight with a mean bowling return, but Dave Watt made his claims for a Test cap with a superb exhibition of pace and control, proving lively on a stale and slow pitch en route to a Cricket Web XI victory in their tour opener. Watt took 4 for 33, including the wickets of Loots Bosman (2) and Neil Johnson (1) in his 4th over. He returned to remove the dangerous Heath Streak for 28, then stunned a busy Albie Morkel with a sharp lifter.
The Nicky Oppenheimer XI faltered in the chase of 215 for victory, all out for 189. It had as much to do with the pitch as the quality of bowling. Timing was a precise art and the bounce was relatively uneven, as the Webheads discovered early on, after Goff chose to bat first.
Donald ripped one through the gate - the ball kept low - and bowled Andrew Cloete in the second over of the day. Streak then found the healthy outside edge of Moerk's bat and the reviews were dismal early on - 6 for 2. Captain Goff came to the rescue, first with Fitzsimmons (28), then more prominently with David Kearsley.
Goff went on to score a responsible 75, but perished to a loose pull shot against a Donald long hop. Kearsley struck just a solitary boundary in his 53, holding the innings together, but never managing to accelerate. Momentum came in a greater share from Thamba Mamesh - busy in scoring 22 not out - and then Watt smashed Donald over long-on and into the stands in the final over of the innings.
The approach to 215 appeared confused early on. After a succession of unsuccessful swipes, Bosman was nipped out. The Nicky Oppenheimer XI found themselves in a tricky spot at the fall of Johnson later in the over, struggling at 25-2. Francois du Plessis buckled down to play the anchor role in the chase, but Hashim Amla could not accelerate at the other end, as needed. Instead the innings just grew progressively stagnant, especially against the variations of Neil Pickup and Tom Halsey, who shared 20 overs for the price of 71 runs.
Halsey broke through with the wicket of Amla, and Streak arrived at the crease with a mission to up the ante. He started with a lofted boundary to his first delivery, but could not reproduce such heroics, though he did play a purposeful hand at almost a run-a-ball. Greg Thomas picked out du Plessis and wrapped up Prince and van Wyk in quick time after, leaving too huge a task for Albie Morkel and the lower order to approach.
