And where would he bat? team would be (Averages last 2 years):

Warner (60.31)
Bairstow (57.57)
Hales (47.82)
Root (70.26)
Stokes (55.30)
Buttler (41.27)
Bowlers

Smith has only averaged 44 in the past 2 years in ODI's, so unless you're only playing 4 bowlers + Stokes I don't see how you get him into the team. Hazlewood would get in too, forgot about him with him not playing.
You're playing 5 batsmen right now so?

Think he's probably ahead of Hales, though admittedly it's not a lock.

For all the poor bowling choices Smith has made today, I think his choice to bowl out Stark as early as the 38th over, was spot on. The only chance Aus have, given their sub-par score.

These two bat 5 or 6 overs we should be home. Aus got a puncher's chance though, and with Dave Warner you never know.

I mean, you are surely picking him above Hales? I know he goes against the approach but at some point you just pick the much, much, much, much better cricketer.
Smith ain't that much better than Hales in ODIs though. I'd still pick him over Hales, but you're overrating Smith a bit. His SR and average is decent but nothing more.

There's an argument for it sure, but it's not a lock, and another argument for Hales is the much much better strike rate. We've already got Root and Bairstow who can do the anchoring role within the team, why do we need Smith for it?

Hales is Bradman infront of Smith in LOs.Smith should be kept away from ODIs and T20.Still don't know how he gets so much money from IPL

Well I assume Bairstow is opening, in which case he isn't an anchor at all.

FInch and M Marsh did the exact same thing they did at Melbourne, failed to accelerate through the middle/start of the end and put all the onus on the lower-middle order who had to throw their wickets away trying to score quick enough against good bowling in order to make up for the slow start. You can't just expect your middle and lower order to score at 9 or 10 an over at the death, it's not always going to happen these days.

No I agree re: his record. But the point is that given that their records are similar, Smith is the better cricketer. Fielder too.

Finch, for all his power, actually struggles to really up the tempo in the middle orders. So noticeable today.

Yeh true actually Hales is a proper plumb in the field. Smith bowling also can be useful on a given surface. Hales bowling does gain extra points for being pure meme though, worst action i've ever seen.

Yeah, if we’re talking about Smith’s weakness in a format, it’s T20s. Don’t think he should be an automatic pick there.

Smith actually was a really useful middle overs spinner once, actually not that much worse than what we get out of Zampa now. Haven't seen it in years though, probably not worth even considering it while he's captain.

Yeah, an option though if you got a dirty pitch in a WC SF or Final.

This is some properly good finishing from Woakes.
