I am a big fan of Marto's, so I was quite annoyed when somebody gave him the name Damien duck Martyn during the VB series. This is just a response to that. So build a bridge already.
Damien Martyn is, has always been and always will be Damien duck Martyn :P

And I can't beleive SL let a guy like gilchrist score a 100. Whats up w/ u SL? I am always supporting you and you keep letting me down

Maybe, just maybe, Gilchrist batted well? I mean, the guy only averages 54 in test cricket, surely he can be capable of a good knock once in a while? ;)

well for a guy who has never really done well in the sub continent and who has been struggling in his last 3 innings there must have been some really ordinary bowling thrown at him to let him get off to a start

Hmm, I seem to remember a certain bloke named Sachin Tendulkar at the SCG? 301 without losing his wicket at all - after a pretty poor series otherwise, and not exactly great history either. Just saying that it is possible to bat well even if your history at a place isn't that good.

(ok, so the attack was Lee, Gillespie and Bracken, and I know you don't rate Tendulkar...)

I seem to recall a certain Mr Gilly scoring a brilliant 122 from only 112 balls against a Supposedly "Great" attack in Mumbai in the 1st test of the 2000/01 series...

indeed.....

i think really Gilchrist is vunerable early in his innings vs spin...if you dont get him early he has every chance of posting a big score once his eye is in

Gilly did not look good early. He had an edge fall about 1/2 a metre short of 3rd slip and many other miscued shots due to very good bowling. If anything the field settings weren't all that attacking, had there been a short cover or short mid-wicket he may have gone early, but once he got going he was hitting the ball very well.

With Gilly on the sub-continent it is all or nothing.

Is it me or does the Aussie team try something different in the 2nd innings on this tour? Or is it the pitch?

It is bewildering how in the first innings, the Aussies can be bowled out for next to nothing and then the second innings comes along, and suddenly they cannot bowl us out quickly.......
Yeah I have noticed and commented on it.

I would of thought that was Gilchrist per usual?
I can't remember the scores he got against Pakistan in 2002 (although I know he got a duck when Ahktar ripped through Australia for the umpteenth time) but if you count the India tour of 2001 and this current Sri Lankan tour he has had 9 innings in the sub-continent and has only reached double figures twice and those scores have been 122 & 140*.

Huh!?!?

what are you on man??

I dont know what you think of Gilchrist but to suggest it's Sri Lanka's fault Gilly made a 100 not the fact he is one of the best batsman in the world is like saying "I cant beleive you let McGrath bowl a maiden" Well not quite but I hope you get the point.

maybe you're forgetting the Indians......

it's 272/4 and as i speak ponting just whacked a HUGE 6 of Murali's bowling............so unless a batting collapse of somesort happens soon, SL might be in a bit of strife!

good to see that Ponting wasn't too badly injured.

Ponting is out - I cant' tell from the cricinfo commentary whether it's a dodgy call or not... They seem to allude that it came off the pads, but maybe it touched the bat on the way through as well.

I still feel that the Aussies need another 100-150 runs.

You need more than just batsman unfortunatly for India.

Even so there top seven is still weeker than Australia's.

All those Martyn-detractors are really looking a tad silly now.

I think Linda's signature says it all about him, even though his "bad form" was still averaging 40+!

Gee....all that 'ripping' and 'umpteenths' you'd think Pakistan would have beaten us in a test at some point........what was the series score in that series you were referring to?
I seem to have forgotten.

We won convincingly 2-0 but I seem to remember that Australia won the matches with the ball and not the bat. We bowled Pakistan out for 50 odd twice in the one test, so even if Australia scored 130 and Ahktar ripped through us we still would have won by an innings (can't remember exact score). Plus, we don't have to lose or be bowled out for a cheap score to be 'ripped' through. We could be 3/370 before Ahktar comes in with a blistering spell to 'rip' us out for 420. Add to that, that we play Pakistan in one-day games too, where Ahktar has 'ripped' through us plenty of times.

For those who have access to actual coverage of the match (outside of the cricinfo text commentary), does it look like there will be further play today? I haven't seen any updates since they went off for the light, and the rain came.
