well they had a lot of security gaurds at Eden park but they didn't stop stuff being chucked on the feild. It has been blown out of proportion as it wasnt that bad. The people that run on to the feild make the game more exciting

I don't think the Aussies were so much worried about the pitch invaders, but by the fruit and other projectiles being thrown at the players.

I am a security Guard for RedBadge(the company that works for Jade Stadium) and huge measures are being taken. It will not be just what you can see but alot more behind the scenes stuff as well. I think it comes to the simple fact that if you want cricket to continue coming to your town, then things will have to change or teams will refuse to play there

Certain elements within the crowd were disgraceful.

Hurling bottles and other objects at people is not on.

As countless mothers have said over the years, "it's all good fun until someone gets hurt."

Take an extreme scenario.

Someone throws a bottle.

It hits a sportsman in the eye and, as a result, his career is ended.

The party at fault goes to jail.

NZ cricket and the ground itself would almost be bankrupted by the compensation claim.

Sporting teams then refuse to tour NZ until onerous security measures (such as high fences) are implemented.

NZ has it's claim to the RWC removed.

Still all good fun?

As for running onto the ground, that was funny in the 70s. The rest of the world is now utterly bored with it.

Unfortunately, NZ crowds have long been regarded as the world's worst. Until NZ people's antiquated views as to what constitutes acceptable are brought into the 21st century, NZ will continue to be regarded as an unpleasant joke.

Certainly not making excuses for the behaviour, it's not good at all, but haven't similar things happened in Australia? Seem to remember Mark Richardson going to field on the boundary at the MCG wearing a batting helmet.

There are examples of similar behaviour everywhere.

However, the main issue is how long the Kiwis have taken to do anything of substance to prevent/discourage it.

It has been happening for many, many years without any real improvement. In Aus papers today, past players cited examples from every recent tour where missiles have been thrown from the crowd. Far from being confined to fruit (which was considered par for the course), the objects included full glass tomato sauce bottles, a toilet seat and a full can of motor oil.

In Aus, pitch invasions, etc now carry massive penalties (up to $5,000 fine plus a stay in jail plus bans from future matches, I think). The potential penalty for hurling some of the items named above would be even more severe.

As a result, even the most ****ed idiot thinks twice about it and their occurrence has decreased dramatically.

The surprising thing for me is that it seems confined to cricket. Ive been to many rugby matches in NZ and the crowds have been great - win, lose or draw.

I think the punishments for pitch invasions are similar here, a large fine and I think it's a two year ban, but for some weird reason they still think it's worth it, and they somehow manage to sneak past the security.

Why the hell would someone bring a toilet seat to a cricket match??

Some grounds probably cant afford toilets probably in Bangladesh so they probably dig holes in the ground and they bring a toilet seat along

It was in Wellington.

Wellington/Bangladesh, I can understand the confusion actually :D

Why would anyone carry a toilet seat into a cricket match. And how did they get it inside Wellington. The guy that chucked it must have been really drunk. lmao

[tongue-in-cheek-mode]It goes along with a theory I've had for a while - crowd violence is inversely proportional to sporting violence. Example number 2 - soccer. :D [/tongue-in-cheek-mode]

Ice hockey crowds in the US are the same as you describe rugby crowds with the difference being with players who play dirty. I remember Steve Yzerman of Detroit being dragged into a crowd when he decked someone. YIKES!

I still find pitch-invaders funny. I don`t condone it in any way, bit I do laugh immensely when I see it.
